Susan, thanks a lot, that helps a bunch!
Poor parrot, i did it all so totally wrong :(
I was like 'you need to be able to hide yourself to feel safe and have something to do, so i'll stuff your cage with fresh branches to chew on and leafs to play with and a cob corn to eat from, and you get no more sunflower seeds for now because you need a healthier diet". A lot of extra stress for the poor sod.
I put a bit of sunflowerseeds back and took away most of the green and fruits, i left the piece of hardboiled egg because it looked like he nibbled on it.
I think its maybe best to leave the branches and corncob and bell in the cage though? He has a lot to adjust to, and in my thinking taking it out again (the stress of that on its own), leaving him with a literally empty cage (nothing to hide behind) isnt good either... might just as well get used to me, the new and improved cage decoration and the new house at once..no?
Its a difficult pet, LOL. They're sensitive to putting new stuff in their cage, but i also keep reading you should rotate and move stuff very often to keep them challenged because otherwise they develop some sort of autism.
I look forward to him getting used and happy, i read conures are real smart clowns and good company :)
I think i'll clickertrain him when the time is there. |
Like any animal they vary in character, so just pay attention and let his/her response be your guide. I would be very careful about putting branches in his cage strictly from a toxin standpoint. Alot of outdoors plants are toxic to birds, and parrots like to chew things you put in their cage to pieces.
Most likely he/she is used to being in a cage with not much in it. I would not be surprised to find that he/she is used to minimal interaction if his care taker was not doing well themselves. So I would put the cage in a warm protected place where he will feel safe and introduce yourself and new things to him/her gradually. Many birds are naturally leery of anything new in their environment. That instinct keeps them safe in the wild. It sounds like she is not really shy or he would be freaking out with all the changes. And yes conures are characters... when they feel safe they like hanging upside down in their cage and they chatter up a storm. They get lonely and like to have you around to interact with.
As far as toys just make sure they can not eat small parts or get tangled in them. I bought a bell once that had a chain that was easy to get caught in and my parrot caught her toe in it. She panicked and it was really hard to get her out. I had clients who had parrots that broke legs by getting toes caught in cloth toys, so it pays to be very careful when selecting what you introduce into the cage.
My parrots liked eggs and shrimp for snacks. Your buddy should be happy with your yummy home grown eggs. |

Had a session with my camera man am I rusty. Course wrong time of day and I'll try again in about 2 hours when the sun starts going down a bit. Just needed to get out and do something with the camera before I forget it exists. |

Sorreeee Barreeeee, but SS is the only place I can't log on to from work because of the captcha thingy - the old decrepit PC there won't do it... so, I can only contribute from home... ;)
Howdee Lobke!! Sounds like you're super busy! I hope you get the little birdie turned around :)

I know that feeling. I don't remember the last time I sat down to process (or even take) photos.

Alohas there Sari! Hope everything's jolly at your job too and with your mini zoo at home! (i often think about you when its wednesday ;))
SS was down earlier, so you probably were right about the server Kelly :/
Susan, thanks again! :)
I baptized the little birdie Icarus in the meantime.
I did my reading about the branches and the toys ;) they're willow and birch, so non poisonous; and the bell has like 4 big earrings so theres nowhere he (im just going to assume its a he) can get stuck in.
I'm still doubting on whether i'm going to take them out again... he seems ok hiding behind them and he even nibbled a leaf off. (first sign of movement i saw)
I also just noticed his wings are clipped! It might mean his owner did take him out of his cage after all, he also is ringed, so i should be able to see how old he is once i can handle him.
I'm curious to see what sort of character and attitude is inside of him, but im also dreading the sounds he'll make once he gets happy again ;) (im prepared for the worst..i know i should expect it to be LOUD!)
The one big worry left is im at work during the day, i leave the radio on for him, but its still over 8 hours... then again thats only for the busy season, i'll do a lot less hours when the busiest time is over. It'll have to do for now :/ |

Hi Barry, I dod pop in occasionally, the trouble is the course is taking more time than I expected lol and if I am on the forums I am not getting anything else done either lol.
I do try to get in here to say hello though.
Bummer on the Atilla review Kelly.
Anita as has been said put white or balc board behind the flowers and then use a white bit of styrophone (or something white or even a shiny cooking tray) as a reflector. Sorry to hear your blue bird is being elusive. Glad you got your camera out, they do sulk when not being used you know.
Rudy I will join you in the complainiator. I thought my port woke up at the beginning of the month but it went back to sleep again.
Wow Lobke you sure have your hands full both at work and at home. Susan gave you some good advice on your new friend.
Bummer on not being able to log in to SS from work Sari. |

LOL sounds like you know a bit about conures, yes they can be loud but they are real characters. As long as you keep them busy they generally don't get too loud while you are home.
The woods you picked should be fine... you might find more information about safe and harmful trees in your area here... a big list. http://www.mdvaden.com/bird_page.shtml
It sounds like the bird received passable care... they don't last long if you do not give them what they need and they start picking feathers if they get too bored.
My birds did fine while I was at work if I gave them good attention once I was home and they did like the radio during the day... more than anything they like to be talked to and they like to watch what is going on in the house. So I had perches throughout the house where they could join in family life. My African grey liked my dogs and used to ride around on my doberman Jhetta's back. They would even sleep together on occasion. She is the dog who also helped my cat deliver her kittens and she was very gentle/nurturing. I later I had a little terrier that I would never have trusted with my birds or even cats for that matter. |
