Laurin, so even after your genius freind told you that your lenses are not going to be good enough you still went ahead and switched from a 12MP to a 36MP camera!

What does that say about you my freind? Gotta have the biggest, fastest, etc. :-)

To the OP
Hold off on the 800 purchase, they seem to be having some problems, so don't be one of the early buyers, you may regret it.
I also will be buying one in the near future, but will not be using it for 38c a pop!

I'm waiting to see what the D600 is like, suppose to be a full frame 24 mp.

Apparently SONY (who make sensor chips for Nikon) are holding off on the release of their equivalent 36MP camera until Nikon resolve the issues.

Correct. why? because I can. another full day with it and I gotta use a word I never use. Awesome Detail at 300%..Video is to die for.I also played with a D4 also. It's to much bulk. And I have already talked to my friend the optics guy, I've shot it throughout the range and F8 is the sweet spot On a 14-24/24-70, 70-200 and 200/400 But with that detail any fstop is miles from my D3 which was darned good..The HDR function is sweet and works well.I had 14 days for a full refund and wasn't sure because of reviews pro and con, it's what works for me is what counts and this one delivers. The D3x Did not.If your gonna buy one best put in your order now.And there are no spare Batteries available at present. And there was a recall on some of them for overheating. Same Battery as the D7000.

It's not a sports camera in the slightest. But Fineart,Video,Product,Portrait work. Nothing touches it for Image quality in anywhere near that price range. And I did test the 24 Sony. I felt Like I was gonna break it. Very happy here and until the day arrives I go back to Med format Film [which I will, Hassy with a Vback.] This just might be the last DSLR for me.Large jpegs are 7360 x 4912.Apple just came out with a 2TB Internal HD for the Imac. Just ordered it.

I've been testing the current lineup from everyone for about 6 Months. I almost kept the D3 and almost got a Fuji X1 pro for carry around. but said what the hell. And for what I got for the D3, the new one was only a few hundred Bucks more.Very Happy here and was very suspicious at first.

Got my order in already :-)

One more thing about going with a larger than 12MP camera, you need a gruntier (read more powerful) computer. I went that direction first, built my computer first so that I can handle the file size.
Quad i7 processor
16GB DRAM
1GB Graphics card
2x SSD's and 2 x Hard drives, does a 12 image panorama stitch in 30 secs, iMac takes a minute, 32 bit Windows computer took 12 minutes.
Expecting obviously things will slow down some, but still a livable pace no doubt. :-)

Jeff my friend, even though I ordered mine in March I still suspect that you will get yours before I get mine. As I recall, Mr. Rinder thought the D300 was the greatest thing since chocolate when I was considering buying one. And right after I did his position was that "Nikon made a big mistake on this one". So the jury is still out I'd say on the D800.

I have no problems with my D300, and still think it is the best Nikon DX camera available. Thought about the D700, but now think that the D800 is the way to go.
I am tossing and turning as to whether I need the camera or a new laptop first :-)

My copy of The D300 was faulty. but I was comparing it to my D2X at the time which was in for repair right before a workshop.I've completed every test I can do on the d800. Still very Impressed with Resolution in the middle range of my glass. F8 is spectacular. Video is breath Taking but I must say in all Honesty, The camera is very unforgiving with focus and detail at those file sizes, When you "Really" nail the focus it is glorious and Harkens back to med format detail But if you miss it even slightly it really shows as compared to my D3 which was very forgiving. So be aware of that . I shot a bee in a flower from 20ft away with the 70-200VR2 and at 300% you could easily see the fuzz on his back.Noise is Fairly good. I pushed it to 6400, My conclusion the D3 was better.Like said this camera will be great for still Life,Landscape.studio and fashion for textures in fabric and such. Im keeping it and will post some examples soon, I even tried to get some moire, None. . trouble is, no matter who I know or can get favors from. There are NO spare batteries anywhere nor vertical Grips and I need a grip for stability, It nosedives badly with big glass, even the 24-70 or the 14-24.But, All in All. I think it's quite a machine but I don't recommend it for newbies until they get there technique down as I said it's very unforgiving. Love the built in Copyright/artist Metadata and the built in HDR. single shot and 3 shots option. And it shoots to .MOV H.264 so I can transcode to Apple prorez 422 PJPEG for video.30 fps,25,24,50 and 60 Good job Nikon.Screen is 3.2 in BTW.

Now I gotta get more storage with Huge and I mean HUGE files for each Pic. LOL

Also battery Life is no where near what nikon says it is.When making a purchase. I just look at the specs, I don't read reviews to much, I need to see if it works for me and my way of shooting. Make sure you can return it like anything else [ and Im quite well known at my store for that]. and do not fill out the warranty card. You cannot return something if you do.It's not for everyone, thats for sure like a d300 or D7000 or even a D3/D4.And yes, A computer with some horsepower is a must.

And If stock is all you do. You don't need this at all.

I find a similar pattern with my 7D. The pixel density (pixel pitch) on the sensor is quite similar between these two cameras. I think that people don't realize how brutal this can be when it comes to technique. Even with image stabilizers, any camera shake or missed focus shows up very strongly. I suspect that this is why so many people had "softness" issues when the 7D first came out. I expect that there will be similar issues with the D800. Long lenses are brutal with these sensors. Getting that razor sharp image consistently can be a real pain.

But when you get it, the results are awesome.

I have been using the D800 for some time now. I had already purchased 2 batteries and the battery grip 2 months in advance. All I can saw about this baby is WOW.

Well worth the wait

I still feel D3s is a better camera in terms of the skin tones and other details. the skin tones from D800 are a bit warm, but manageable.
