And I thought my Dad's cat has spectacular eyes...

Clearly I have a lot to learn yet. But, I'm not going to give up.

I can see that I have issues with focusing, but I just can't see it when I'm looking through the viewfinder or at the screen on the camera - only when I get home and can see it on the computer.

If go to playback on your camera and zoom in all the way it give you a 100% crop that is what I do on all of my images. First I get the lighting right then before I start shooting a bunch of photos I take a test shot and check focus. You are going to be wasting a lot of time if you don't do this.

Problem is, even when you zoom in, images look sharper on that little screen than they do when you start processing. Good focus just takes lots of practice and effort until you get used to it. It's not just point, focus and click. You need to work on your technique if you're handholding, and make sure your tripod is solid along with using a remote and mirror lock up.

You are lost in time. They now use heat seeking missiles with multiple warheads full of lead shot. ;)

I've been sitting and thinking (as well as trying to improve my photography) for a few days now, and I'm wondering how this one would do?

Don't forget to set the camera's diopter before you shoot. If that's off, you'll play hell trying to get the focus down where it belongs.
