I have been cutting some footage to submit and I noticed quick time has something called AV controls I wanted to change the playback speed and save it that way. But it doesn't seem to let me save it. It also has sliders to adjust the color and contrast. After opening it again it just goes back to normal. Is this function only for when I view it? If so what good is it. Maybe I am doing something wrong.

Is there a better cheap editor out there that lets me do minor adjustments to color, contrast, brightness and the speed of the video? I'm just getting started in this and I am not ready to shell out the big bucks yet.

Hi,

do you have a Mac? Usually, iMovie comes with a new one. It has some nice editing and some basic fx capabilities. While my bigger projects are edited in Final Cut Pro, most of my footage goes through iMovie. I then export to Photo JPEG from there. Try it, maybe it's good enough already.

If not: Final Cut Pro X is a huge beast for quite a low price. Ridiculously enough, it lacks the simple "Export as QuickTime Movie" and the detailed controls of iMovie. On the FX side, however, it's huuuuge!

Apart from that, I only know stuff from hearsay. There's supposed to be some kind of Adobe Premiere Express, maybe something basic from Avid as well. Others have to chime in here.

Best regards,

Christian

Edit: Here's a screenshot of the "per clip settings", so it's not global. If you have several cuts, it might be a bit tedious to put the same fx on every clip. But for footage, you usually don't cut that much, I guess...

Given that iMovie is a bargain on the app store or even comes for free with a new Mac, me thinks that's really nice for a start.

Sorry for the German only screenshot, I guess the icons are international... ;-)

Edit 2: There are also speed controls on the "Clip" panel... Never checked it out, but it's supposed to work.

Best,

Christian

Thanks, I looked into that seems like a reasonable price but unfortunately I don't have a mac. I don't know why they don't make a PC version. Seems they are missing out on sales. I know it's to encourage people to purchase mac. but if I switch to mac it's not going to be over some software.

Ah, sorry, didn't know...

I've long passed PCs, but from the days of old, I remember quite a few low cost editing suites: Adobe Premiere LE, Avid stuff (usually a bit too basic or way too expensive), many small companies that I don't remember and FWIW "Magix". Are you U.S.-based? I don't know if they ever entered that market, but at least in Europe, they got their Video deluxe suite and some other smaller stuff. Try http://www.magix.com/us/

Power Director is a good one for a PC and relatively low cost:

http://www.cyberlink.com/products/powerdirector/overview_en_US.html?affid=2581_930_80_paidsearch-us_0_1&r=1

It was $99.95, now it's $79.95

You can also download a free trial but the export options are limited on the trial version.

Thanks, I am going to check that software out. I think I am just having a hard time not being able to edit my photos like I would a photo. I guess I just need more practice getting it right in camera. Settings seem to be a bit different for the video than when you take a photo, my skies get all washed out.

You should try Blender from

http://www.blender.org/download/get-blender/

or

http://graphicall.org/

Blender is a free 3D modelling program and includes a node based compositor and a VSE (video sequence editor).

Adobe premiere elements is a good cheap editing software.
It gives plenty of options for colour correcting etc and lets you save in many different ways

I have Premier 7 and haven't learned how to use it properly but it works just like Elements should.

Also picked up Magix years ago, it's on some old computer. :) Yes have Cyberlink that came free with a DVD drive or something. Don't use it either.

Here's open source that may be what you are looking for: Avidemux

http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-video-editor.htm#Avidemux

Avidemux lets you do just about everything under the sun. It supports many file types, including AVI, DVD compatible MPEG files, MP4 and ASF, using a variety of codecs. Avidemux is available for Linux, BSD, Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows under the GNU GPL license.

OK after all that, I'm using MPEG Stream Clip (misnomer it works on all file types) does conversions and saves, easy clips, set in and out. Also I have AnyVideoConverter which is just what it says it is. Those two are the easy starter software and FREE.

Avidemux looks like the open source winner?

I use Power Director and am quite happy with it. The learning curve wasn't all that steep and Cyberlinks forum members are absolutely wonderful for helping.

The latest version out is Power Director 10 and it normally costs right around 100.00 but they are having a sale right now at

80.00 for Ultra or 70.00 for Deluxe.

They have a trial version, but I only used it for a couple days before I was buying the full version, I would just go ahead and buy it. It's a great affordable program and works great for stock.

Just sold my 3rd video here in SS in nearly as many weeks. It's great and sure helps that bottom line.

Now I'm video crazy!
