Hello dear friends :) I just received mail from customer that bought my photograph from another agency asking me to buy rights. Here is mail i got:

"We purchased the rights to this image from ****. We are wondering if you would be willing to allow us to have exclusive rights? If so, what would the fee for this be?
I have attached the image in question. We would use this on print brochures and a website.

Thank you,
Joe" I dont have a clue how much money to ask for it ???????

If they are requesting permanent rights (i.e. to own the copyright) then you've hit a jackpot. Figure out how much you are ever likely to earn off of the image and that would be a good starting point.

If they are looking for more of a "term" usage (exclusive rights for a period of time) then you can go to the rights managed sites and use their pricing calculators to determine what the going rate for the usage and term they are looking for.

Either way, congrats.

I don't know how much to charge but I do see one problem. If you've already had sales on it from SS or any other site, can you really offer them exclusive use?

BTW, I've loved that shot since you first posted it a while back!

Maybe figure out how much you've earned on that image in a year's time, then multiply it by 20. You'll have to tell them that it has been sold before, and can still appear in places, even if you remove it.

On the other hand, you could offer to do something similar, but different enough, just for them.

You should be able to get a few thousand for it but wait for someone more familiar with this like Laurin to give you a better idea.

If you make $1,000 a year off it right now and you get that for the next 20 years that's $20,000 you could make off it if you only made $1,000 a year for it now what if you made more?

See where i am going?

since you're ambivalent about selling the rights, ask for $50K. If they buy it, you've hit the jackpot. If they don't, then offer the similar one for, say, $20K.

Or ask someone who has been through this before, like Laurin.

A huge congratulations,btw!!

Wow, congrats!

For your best earner, I'd really jack it up.

And what company is it? Fortune 500? If so, 10x it. And what use do they expect to use it for?

Seriously, don't go low. If they say no, you haven't really lost anything. 10-100k, depending on the use. How stupid are you going to feel is you sell it for $1k and then it appears on every cellular phone in Europe or something.

Definitely I'm thinking you've just won the stock lottery ticket.

You might be able to work out a deal where they use it exclusively for two or three years for like $3,000 or $4,000. I'm not sure why they would want to use it longer than that.

And then you could buy a D800!

:) D800 could be my aim...right now thinking about offering them a new one for 3k or that particular one for 10k..or both options ?
