I recently tried submitting photos to Shutterstock and they all failed to upload due to my images not meeting the 4.0 megapixel requirement.

However, my camera is 4.0 megapixel and I took the images at the largest size. They were about 1.87 mb or something close.

So my question now is, how do I know if my images are 4.0 mgpx? The dimensions? Size?

I know they were taken at the largest setting and my camera is 4.0 yet they did not upload on Shutterstock.

Any clarification about this would be appreciated.

Your mp size is simply the length X the height of your image in pixels.

To be honest I doubt if your camera is giving you exactly 4mp images. Often the actual output is a touch under that size. Plus if you do any cropping of the image even at its biggest you will be going under the 4mp minimum.

If you are serious about stock I would upgrade to a better camera more in line of a 10mp range.

If you are 5% off you may upsize, but thats the max SS will allow. So if your photos are 3.81mp or higher you can upsize to 4mp

lol - what I meant was that since the OP never bothered to return and comment on the answers given we don't know if they ever read them at all. 5 days and no "thank you" or any other response from vinnie77.

Thanks everyone for sharing your feedback and insights. I'm just getting back here now, sorry for the delay to reply! I'm going to try to upsize my photo the 5% now and hope it will still be alright to submit.

Cheers,

Vinnie.

You got in there Vinnie just in the nick of time.
It does make the blood boil a bit when a question is asked and others go out of their way to make the time to answer and then there is no reply from the original poster

Late reply, but at least a reply ;-) This is a very active forum and the members are very passionate, experienced and committed. As someone here once said, these people are helping new members become their own competition, in their spare time, for free ! How crazy and unique is that?!

Easiest way to have done this would be identify your specific camera so people have an idea what it is? That data is useful.

Finding your file size is fairly easy. Open in any photo editor and if it doesn't have the dimensions listed, click on RESIZE image, (you don't change anything just look) #### times #### and you have it in pixels.

Open in irfanview, (free software) click "I" it will show the number of pixels. Same as above multiple #### x #### and you see a number.

What you are going to need to start with is roughly 2400 x 1800 which will equal 4,320,000 pixels or... 4 Megapixels or four million pixels.

Hope that makes it easier to understand.

It's probably better to have a 5MP camera to start with to have to edit and crop allowance. Also as someone else pointed out, some camera say 4 Megapixels and are right on the edge, and are really 3.95MP so they won't ever pass.

I have occasionally wanted to upload an image that was just a hair too small. Instead of interpolating up, I usually add onto one or more edges.

Look your image over, and decide which edge(s) would be best to expand for a good composition.

Add a border of the needed width to that side.

then, clone, paint, fill, or otherwise color it to match the background.

I did that with these. I have gotten a "bigger" camera since, and haven't had to do it in a while, but it worked well when I needed it.

(oogh. I was looking at my earliest submissions to find these, and now I want to delete a lot of things)

Oooh, dont delete photos, you never know what might sell out of the blue. The general idea is, if its accepted, leave it. Mike Price has a good thought on the matter and I quote "I dont delete accepted photos as I find that a deleted photo never sells."
