Good choice Jeff, 16GB ram with a quad i7 will be smoking.

Yep, my desktop has the same and is smoking.
A panorama stitch that took 10 mins on a 32 bit dual processor 4 GB DRAM, with a 1GB graphics card computer now take literally 30 secs. I don't expect the laptop to do quite the same since the desktop has SSD's, but I know it will be better than the dual processor, 4GB laptop I have :-)

Want a new laptop to replace my old MacBook Pro as well. But what can I get for it if I go to the store and bring it in after already upgrading the RAM from 2-6 and battery? Is is worth it since I can't upgrade the processer....almost 5 years old....

5 years is a VERY long time for Laptops. Mine is 8 Months old and kinda useless. But it's a PC. never again. I used it last week when sick. and can't figure out how anyone can use them.I try to turn the damn thing off and have to wait for endless updates.

Well they tried to deliver it yesterday, but I was not home, on my way back from my other house :-)

So, it is supposed to be delivered today Yea!

Will let you know how it fares :-)

Agree with laurin 5 years is about 1 year too long for a computer of any kind, mother boards change taking newer processors, processors themselves have changed now on third generation of the Intel "i" processors, SATA has gone to SATA 2, USB to USB 3, all faster ways to move data, SSD's have arrived, faster transfer of Data, and all of this in the last 5 years!

BTW anyone want a Dell Latitude D830 with 4 GB of Dr

Buying a new computer :-)

Seriously, since you already have invested in Mac and Adobe software for it, probably a good idea to stick with a new Mac. I believe that ADOBE are pretty good about allowing folks to switch platforms, so if you do want to go over to the dark side it is doable, (I have a foot in both camps and software for both platforms)

The new HP has a 6 hour battery life.

And dont forget there are lots of new Touch Screen computers (HP & Gateway that I know of) that are becoming more prevalent now.

Well, as you can see mine is a D7, i7, 16GB, 1 TB, 2 GB graphics and a 17 inch screen, so is quite large, but has more stuff in it, and if it runs hot, I guess I will be buying one of those fan trays to go under it :-)

I'm glad you settled the laptop quandary. Now settle my curiosity bug. What are you doing with an i7 Windows box when you have an iMac? Are you doing all your photo work on the Mac?

Actually I do most of my image processing on a Desktop i7, 16GB DRAM, 2 SSD + 2 7200 RPM hard drive, 1 Gb Graphic card computer that I built. Some of the time I do it on the iMac, both have two screens and are networked to share files, so I can go back and forth at will. I have always been a ambi-dexturous kind of guy :-)
I use the iMac for all my email, web surfing, etc, because there are fewer viruses for Macs, and I prefer the interface, however, it is not quite as fast as the machine I built. A stitch of 12 images took aroaund 5-10 minutes on a 32 bit Dual processor computer, takes 1,5 minutes on my Dual Proc i3 iMAC, and 30 seconds on my newer computer I built. I am hoping that when I am on the road travelling the new laptop will be a similar speed or somewhere between the iMac and the homebrew computer.

It arrived, and I am busy loading software right now so cannot tell you how good it is yet, screen looks good, true 1920x1080 quality.
Have PS, and the tablet software loaded already.

OK, one yhing I can tell you is that this D7 has a fan built in and a battery compartment that holds it up off of any surface, abd it does not get hot, naturally it appears to do everything pretty fast, but I have not tested it yet with a 12 image stitch :-)

Mine's getting close to that (the MacBook Pro), bought it in early 2008. But I don't do my photo editing on it anymore since getting the iMac a year ago. Not sure what I'll replace it with when it finally dies. Maybe an iPad....
