How do I fix the jagged edges from changing the background color. Especially around the dogs ear.

Best thing to do is shoot it right the way you want it. other than that. Skin is easy, Dogs hair or human Hair is next to impossible. I can do it fairly well But a total waste of time for what you could possibly make on this, Hair , fur and trees are just nearly Impossible. Also next time. Ya need to get better focus and WB. Shes to orange.Even if you could fix it, I don't think it would be accepted. Ya missed the black area on the left also and you cut off her hand. And, to be picky. If you shoot her again. brighten her teeth and go to Hue and saturation,Pick yellow and desaturate. Nothing Personal. just saying.

To do this requires a whole lot of technique and the proper lighting to pull it off especially with hair.

Notice how you have cut the dogs ear off to try and get it right.

You need good light and they need to be in front of a white BG and you need to overexpose the BG aka blow it out.

Laurin already explained.

This is the original pic unedited except for size. Just for info purposes. As you can see, my background has issues, lol. The Drop sheet is too thin (muslin) and I need to get some thick curtains for the window behind it. That's why I tried to fix it.

Laurin. Those were Isolations (that's what they are called, right?)? Or was that the original backgrounds?

This is 20 seconds. about as close as your gonna get it. I fixed WB and teeth. But at 100% full rez it would take way to long. Muslin is useless. Get a roll of Vinyl. Cheap. Also I have that same chair I use for models. I take the back off when I shoot.

You definitely need to get a handle on the White Balance, it does not matter where she is from orange skin and teeth will not sell.
Muslin is OK if you use it correctly, by that I mean you just have to swamp the background with light, between 2x and 3x the amount of light you have for fill and or Key light. Use one of the following techniques to do that.

Jeff

I love your lighting illustrations. You should do a book of just these... I am impressed that you offer them so freely as I am sure they take time to "develop"....

Aside from what has been said I would like to see a crop of the dog's face. I have a feeling it is going to be a bit on the soft side. I say this because the dog is closer to the camera than the person is. Depending on the lens, the distance to the subjects and your aperture you may only have about 5 inches to play with on what will be sharp and in focus.

Here is something else to consider when doing a shot like this and you are not sure of your background. Think of possibly going outside to shoot. They may have a great area that could be a wonderful background. You can shoot it in a variety of was from the background being in focus as well or OOF and nice and soft. You could put the person on the ground with the dog which often makes for a very nice "homey
type shot.

I agree. I don't even bother with this kind of isolated or on-white shot anymore. They're too much trouble for the small amount of returns. Of course, that doesn't mean you don't have to be careful with the lighting just because you're outdoors. But a reflector or fill flash is often sufficient.

Here's a pretty cool link that someone posted in these forums a while ago. It works pretty well for cutting out hair. Quick and easy.
