I kinda like that landscape, but it's driving me crazy that the hiker isn't standing on that rock that's right in front of him. I'd also tweak the greens and blues a little. And I took out the foreground rock.

It's no use having knowledge and just keeping it in your mind, so I set up some lights in my lounge and applied the things you guys taught me. Even if it's not used it was still a good exercise in technical aspects of photography. Getting the technicals correct on a set of pliers is the same as getting them correct on all kinds of similar products. Like rinder said if the focus is off and there's noise then its dead in the water so its vital to get the technicals correct.
i've noticed when i make a side by side comparison of my crop on this site and in my image viewer that this web site makes my image look bigger and poor quality, what the hell? surely its supposed to be the same as the imge i see in my windows picture viewer? |
Looks like you nailed the focus problem:-)

photography is great. when your taking a picture your mind focuses on the shot (no pun intended) and you forget about everything else in the world.
the technique for getting this silhouette is pretty cool, i made my monitor into a green screen, took the shot like in the movies and then just make your selection using green channel.
come to think of it, if you need a small light box but you dont have one, then just turn your monitor on its back. if you damage your monitor as a result of this then dont blame me.

Both images have jagged and rough edges.

I agree with Ron and Dave :-)
Jaggies and Yes you can
Better way to do a silhouette is as follows
Take shot over white
Change mode to Grayscale
ADJUST-LEVELS move the black end all the way to the right (white end)
With this because of the spectral highlights I had to use black paint to fill in, but you get the idea
Then reselect mode to be RGB

jeff - i tried your method but it still gave jagged edges.
I went to refine edge after making a magic wand selection over the black and white version from levels adjustment. then i went to smooth and it got rid of the harshness of the jagged bits, but is it good enough?

I went hiking in the peak district on Monday and took some pics of my muddy boots.

Yes it looks good enough now
I use the "Quick selection tool", then "SELECT - Modify - Contract - 1 Pixel> SELECT - REFINE EDGE - SMOOTH - Smart edge detection 24, Output to new layer with layer mask - Flatten image
