Not sure how it works for Nikon glass, but the 18-55 kit lens on the canon is far from crappy.

Congrats with the purchase

this zoom is a 70-300mm veryvery plastic and only cost £85!! but ive taken some ok shots with it so for the money it's a fantastic lens. ok no where near as sharp as the 50mm but for outings with the family and taking snaps it's a good lens, it's very limited value for stock work tho but i didnt get it for that, i will start to aquire the lens's i need over the next few months with luck. but yeah so far i am over the moon with the camera!

Jason, I have the D7000 and I recently purchased a couple of used Tamron lenses from ebay for $200-$300. I got a 17-50 2.8 and a 28-75 2.8. I'm really pleased with the sharpness on both. I'd say they are giving the Nikon 50 mm 1.8 a good run for it's money!
I have to say, this is a great thread for information, thanks all!
