And I have just tried it with an old D50 too, its still there, it's not quite as noticeable but definitely still there so I assume its a lens issue.

Yep. I got a slight spot at f11 when photographing white clouds, barely noticeable, then it got progressively worse as stopped down to f22. Wonder if the G version does this. Having some at f11 bothers me, although I never noticed it before because I almost never use it at f11. The whole reason I have it is for the speed.

The top image I posted is 1/8 sec at f8, so at slower speeds it will appear even at the larger apertures.
Thanks for checking that out for me, at least I know it isn't something wrong with my particular lens. I just know now that I can not use that lens for evening or heavily overcast photography.
Still looking for suggestions for an alternate that will not let me down. Abandoned buildings in low light are one of my favorite subjects. DANG!

I like my Tamron 28-70 2.8. There's also the new 50 1.8G. Not sure if it would have the same issues.

Finally made it into the city to visit the camera shop. It was quiet so I had the attention of all 4 employees behind the counter, none had ever heard of the issue before, so they took a new camera as well as a new lens and were able to instantly create the problem. I have trouble believing that no one has any knowledge of this.

We tried a few shots with the G version and it didn't seem to have the issue.

I picked myself up a gently used Tamron 28-70 2.8 for $175 and it seems to be a nice choice. Thanks for the advice Rob. :)
