I see lots of questions about portraits here. One high-quality freely available resource on the internet is the US Navy's photographic training course. The portrait section is chapter 7 of the basic course and has lots of good tips in it. Worth looking at, anyway.

Yes, it scares me, too. But it is one hell of a resource.
