Jon has previously mentioned that there are a few different 'methods' of generating thumbnails, and none of them work ideally for every single image - what they're using seems to be the best for most images, but every now and again you will find something like yours, which has obvious issues - one would hope that the designers would realise anything that artifact affected wouldn't have been accepted by the site in the first place, and that it's just the thumbnail representation that has issues...
