Yuri, you have realy came a long way... I noticed that your very first image here at SS, with the title "Sushi shrimp" doesn't have the keywords "Sushi" or "shrimp"!
Go ahead and add this keywords!! maybe someone will find and buy you photo!...
Then again, maybe you just don't care about it... hehehe! |

Not sure if it has come up already in this long thread, but according to Yuri's website he contributes to 16 stock sites, some micro and some high-priced.
I doubt he's doing $300/day from each site, but still. Just speculating at his daily totals across all 16 sites is mind-boggling.
For anyone who hasn't read through his site already (which is probably very few people at thsi point), I also highly recommend his post-shoot editing process article. The amount of time invested in choosing RAWs, passing an image through the various stages of editing, and even the wait time before finally keywording and uploading says alot about Yuri's work ethic and why he is so successful. |

Eventually I really wonder if there's anything that hasn't been thought of by numerous people - even what may appear at first to be very original and creative. With 6 billion+ people in the world, it might be safe to say that there is no longer such a thing as a truly original thought anymore. ;-)
I know that on another site I have a shot of a particular job site area in Atlanta. A somewhat boring shot but it's of an industrial theme that sells very well for me, and I went to this site one day and took numerous shots from varied angles along a building, etc. Well, one day I was teaching someone how to use microstock and search for images so I looked up the proper keywords, and saw "my" shots, and clicked the thumbnails to show this person some examples of again, "my" work...
Thing is, it wasn't mine! Someone else who sells on that same site who apparently lives also in metro Atlanta found this same somewhat out of the way job site, took images on the same type of day, same time of day, and at the exact same angles. Even the keywording was very close. Even I had to look very closely to realize they weren't my shots - and, they had sales on their versions as well.
Now, at first I did get kind of pissed off and assumed they had copied my stuff since mine was more established and theirs was relatively new. I asked in a post if others had this type of experience and how they personally thought about it, and it so happens this person saw that post (I didn't mention their name or anything in it, though). They assured me via email that they hadn't even seen my stuff before, it was what they thought an original idea for them, etc etc etc.
Ok, so the point is that there is still always that chance they did copy my stuff once they saw how many downloads I get on there from them, but, they could well have been telling the truth as well. I mean, I once saw a TV commercial where a fish was jumping out of a bowl and I thought, "wow, if I could catch something like that or put it togther in Photoshop...." (having no idea it's been done already, etc). So, I know copying DOES go on, but there's a LOT of coincidences in what is really a small world, too. It's probably accurate to assume that 90% of all shots online have been thought of by numerous photographers or artists already - it's just how many that choose to finish and upload them that determines how popular or "unique" they seem to be. |

You summed it up best there right at the end.
Unique thought is probably obsolete. Unique action, on the other hand, is still alive and well and separates the people who talk about their ideas, think of interesting things to do or say, from the people who actually go out and do them.
It always cracks me up a bit when I'm among a group of people and something might come on the tv or someone might bring up a topic of conversation and someone says, "I though of doing that years ago! That was MY idea!"
It always makes me want to say, "Would you really have ever done it?"
I have more respect for the person who does something and inadvertantly duplicates something that has already been done, than I do for the person who just talks about things they claim that they will someday do. |

Of course, there is a huge difference sometimes over what is "interesting" and what "sells" in stock.
Example: Personally I like seeing well done images like fish jumping out of bowls, or dancing, or whatever. I think they're neat and wish I had the patience to crank out stuff like myself. But looking at many stock sites, what sells? Two hands shaking... a person passing money to another... a smiling customer service rep on the phone.... what many might consider rather boring shots - but they sell.
I have numerous construction-oriented photos in my portfolio here as well as other sites I sell on. Quite frankly, though I do think out their angle and the way I shoot them, the subject matter to me is pretty BLAH, yet, they by far my best sellers on all sites, and I sell many copies every day, on every site. While I get compliments on the more artsy-fartsy shots I work up, I sell very few of those.
So what we like to do, and what we like to see, and what OTHERS like to SEE, isn't necessarily what SELLS. ;-) |
