I have just ordered the Canon 50 mm 1.8II for low-light work. Any comments? If you are UK based and thinking of buying one 7dayshop.com seems to be the cheapest at £54. Much cheaper (that means less expensive for you Yankees) in the States.

It's a beautiful lens. You'll like it.

I use it whenever I’m doing extreme close up macros. I usually stack 3 extension tubes on to get very close to the subject. You can see samples in my abstract gallery at ChandraPhoto.

V nice pix! Are those really done with the Canon 50mm 1.8? I love the first flower pic.

What is chandraphoto all about?

Graeme,

Thanks,

Yep all the shots in the abstract gallery were done with the Canon 50mm 1.8 + Kenko extension tubes.

Chandra is my Son's middle name (which was my father's middle name :) ). I couldn't come up with a good name for the domain so I decided to use Chandra :).

Nicely done and very nice shots, I am excited about getting my lens now, but it will take a bit of work to get to your level.

Hi Carl,

Question for you:
Which extension do you use? 12, 20 or 36mm?
BTW Nice shoots, I like it!

Graeme,

You'll enjoy the new lens. Thanks for the compliment, but I'm not a pro. Get a couple of flood lights at you local hardware store you'll be taking great macro shots in no time :).

Fred,

I stacked all three tubes to get very close to the flowers. The front element of the lens was less than three inches away from the flower.

The 50mm f/1.8 should be made a mandatory buy, so people can see the quality Canon's are capable of with a good lens - it is amazingly sharp for it's price, and compared to anything else in the range the 'bang for buck' is brilliant - comparably, the f/1.4 is over priced for what it offers - it's just a shame that can't apply whatever magic they used to do this lens for this price to the rest of the range...

It's commonly reffered to as the 'Fantastic Plastic' lens in Canon circles... you'll love it - fast, sharp, good clear contrast & colour... I get lazy and use the 28-135 IS most of the time as a 'walkaround' lens, but the 50mm spends a good amount of time on the front of the 10D...

Cheers,
Stuart

Thanks Stuart!
I want to buy this lens... Maybe with my first payment on Shutterstock!
Here, in Canada, I can find this lens for about 119$ CAD. It's a good price!

It is as good as L glass, and the price is hard to believe....I, also wish Canon would do the same magic with some other lenses!

Can't wait...it is all down to the Royal Mail. How about a suggestion as to what I shoot first?
