which image factory filter gives you the polarization effect ? the equalizer ? i hear people using it instead of a polarizer.

5. Now, go to the history brush tool. Make sure your brush is still 30+% soft, Opacity set at 70% (Change this as necessary if you do not like your results). Make sure you are still on your subject’s layer, and brush on the parts that have excess color on them. Resize your brush as needed to brush back in small strands of hair, etc. If you make a mistake, easily go back by using the step back command located in the edit menu.

i use Photoshop Elephants V5. i dont see a history brush. there are the brush states in the history pallete but when i click on them, the state disappears. maybe i cant do this ?? can i just use background eraser ? or does this cause ugly stuff which will be rejected ?
just curious. (you also mention 'hold down your cursor'. i dont understand this... what cursor'? are you refering to ?
thanks

Its even worse now. I moved to Brantford to get away from the crazies in their really big SUVs and the darting BMW 318's.

If you need a watch, my daughter works at "La Swiss" at Square One. She's the cute one with shoulder length blond hair. Takes after her Mom otherwise she'd be butt ugly like me.

Now back to a blue sky...

What i like to do is use the PLC filter and then in PS bring up the saturation of the blues a bit. Sometimes I have to tweek the lightness and/or the hue a couple of points. Watch your angle when shooting. PL works best at 90 degrees to the sun.

Hey, blue sky's my middle name lol. or something.
Wally, my answer to the OP is exactly the same as yours:
- circular polarizer rotated to where sky is darkest
- photoshop saturation to boost blue
- sometimes tweek hue&lightness (but subtly because otherwise they can result in banding).

A simple (and FREE) in-camera trick without using a polarizer is to shoot at a 180 degree angle away from the sun against the late afternoon Eastern sky just before the sun starts to set, or early morning Western sky shortly after the sun has begun to rise. Those skies contain beginnings/remnants of the darker nighttime sky.

The color in this photo didn't require any adjustments to balance or saturation (not even a curves adjustment), because I shot it just before sunset. Direct golden light of the fading sun was used to light the subject, and the sky behind it was starting to turn dark blue.

Here's what I would do:
v1:
1) Create new layer
2) Fill new layer with white
3) Fill new layer with blue to white gradient
4) Create mask for people/beach
4a) On image layer use magic wand set to tolerance of 30
4b) Select sky/water
4c) Go to gradient layer
4d) Select mask button at bottom of layer palette (3rd icon from left) -- this will create black mask of people/sand on gradient layer
4e) Gaussian blur mask by .5
5) Set gradient layer to Multiply at Opacity of 70%

If you're satisfied with just the blue gradient background you can stop here.

A question: I have tried this many times, and always get banding on the gradient. Tried again just now, still the same problem.
Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone know how to fix it? Blur does not seem to do it. Thanks! Linda

Linda

add some noise to the gradient, then blur it.

banding bye bye!!!

Just had a thought...

This would be neat shot to use a pretty cool technique photographer Dave Black uses a lot..

- Use a white balance cooler than daylight (i.e. Tungsten)
- Underexpose the sky by 1 to 1-1/3 stops
- Use flash with warming gels at +2-3 power output

See the first two examples...

Wow... thanks for the great ideas. My apologies for not responding earlier... I was out of town over the weekend.

The blue skies video was great. Katrina, thanks for your inputs and David, how in hell did you get that? Let me know?

I desperately try and avoid going past La Swiss at Square One... the Breitlings are wayyyy too hard to resist. You think your daughter would give me a discount on one of those? :)
