Last year we had a thread where I compiled a list of the top10 features that we need, the team completed a few (spreadsheets for stats, pagination for download page, search within portfolio)

So, it seemed to work to a certain extent and to have the approval of the admins, so let's drop some ideas in one thread (this one) and i'll do a list again and send it to setho.

0.
First and foremost, someone who answers to our request in this forum

1.
Top one priority would be an API with access to most of the informations.

2.
A view of the gallery with a way to edit, delete, mass delete (and mass edit?) pictures
And have access to stats for individual pictures
(More info: there is no proper way to delete or edit images at the moment, which really makes it a pain..get image ID, go to main page, status of submitted photos, edit image by ID, etc..)

3.
A profile page to which users have access
As well as an optional description space for each photo, where the photographer can link back to collections/series and self-crafted lightboxes (Bascially a field where the user can write some text with UBB formatting)
(More info: The users should have a way to contact us, possibly bookmark the page through the site (kinda like "favorite user"), i mean where is it better to do that than on THE subscription site?)

4.
Auto-categorize

5.
Info about what keyword combination was used to buy the image

6.
Free image of the week not in the weekly top50

7.
Polling system for threads in the forums

8.
A special page that lists EL sales with the buyers name + company ordered chronologically as a list.

9.
Referrals with a gallery should be listen on top of the list with number of sales and $ gained next to the name. Something like that, while the name links back to the gallery (and on the bottom, the total earnings):

Name___________Downloads_______Earnings
John Doe__________1000______________30$
Hillary C.__________2000______________60$
MacGyver new_______-_________________-

10.
To be able to order pictures in lightbox like sets and track sales for that particular set, also while browsing the gallery the buyers should be able to check those sets (We already asked for this particular feature many times in the past)

Additional requests:

11.
A way to move straight on to the next preview at full size instead of backing out and clicking the next image.

I think you covered pretty much all my wishes. Remebered two more nice features: suggesting categories based on keywords and showing the keywords that lead to the download.

PS: I hate it when I have to search for some image trough the batches, makes it almost imposible to find.

How about RSS feeds for newly-approved photos, by photographer and by category? Given the widespread acceptance, use, and integration of RSS feeds throughout the Web, not having them here makes SS seem a little outdated.

This could all be done given an API

Point 2 is very important to me. I so often see one of my images where I would like to add a keyword or delete one that I put by mistake but it's far too much hassle to find the image to edit it.

I guess it depends on what you think of as an API. An RSS feed is a pretty easy thing to support, compared to a full-fledged API, so using an API for RSS support seems unnecessarily complex, i.e., it's a "heavy" solution compared to "lighter" alternatives. Also, a full-fledged API could incur security risks that should be absent from basic RSS support. Basic RSS support would be a valuable upgrade with not a lot of effort -- "low hanging fruit" so to speak.

I see what you mean, but a professional team should be able to provide a relatively secure interface, and that interface could allow the development of many different applications, even the firefox plugin wouldn't have to rely on regex to retrieve the data, and could for example use the RSS also to display the latest downloaded images, etc..

i don't know, the possibilities would be endless and i am sure we ahve loads of gifted programmers.

From what i could gather over the years, SS has been built and upgraded to include new functions, but most upgrades took several months to implement,
I'm not the only one to think that they should do a complete overhaul and make use of all the new exciting possibilities that are available

I for one would certainly be a big fan of a profile for contributors, where we could put a little blurb about ourselves, a link to our own site maybe.
Also I do like the idea of knowing which keyword searches are leading to downloads, this helps enormously with knowing which keywords to use and could perhaps help with the keyword spamming issues that are so rampant.
Also more stats on image views, I know we have the option to see most popular but how many views an image gets helps us to know what is really needed and we can work a little more specifically this way.
Perhaps also a section where we can list some of our favourite images from other contributors as well as similar images.
And also, yeah sets and series would be helpful.

I'd really like to have those "Rejection review" threads again. That did really help a lot.

I agree, they did help quite a few.

#2 seems like the most important to me. When contributors are logged in, there should be an 'edit' icon button beneath each image in the gallery (alongside the current "lightbox" and "look closer" icons).

There is no easy way to add or revise keywords. We currently need to take a good guess as to which day the photo was uploaded and start digging through our 'accepted' batches. Completely user-unfriendly! At the very least a mini-thumbnail for each batch would make it easier to hunt around.

If buyers are asking for RSS feeds and little bios on each contributor, then go for it, but if it's just something 'cool' that would be fun then I don't think SS should waste too much time trying to make it happen...

Great Idea, with the keyword issues we and the sites have it sure would be easier to re-do and fix unwanted or useless keywords. I've wanted to change a lot of mine and sure others have also, But the time it takes is overwhelming if ya have a large portfolio. Great Post!!

Thanks Laurin - I've always thought there was a button missing from the gallery (or search results) view. As you point out, the current approach is completely frustrating for anyone with at least a few hundred images in their portfolio. Better, more accurate keywords = better, more accurate searches = happier buyers = more buyers and/or buyers willing to pay more. I think the math works.

While I'm at it (I know, you gotta walk off the stage on a high note, so I shouldn't push my luck!), I think the submission page where you categorize could be tweaked in a meaningful way without getting too fancy-schmancy with the xhtmlmnop... I don't know about you, but more often than not I'm submitting an entire batch (or at least a majority of photos) that fall under the exact same categories. I'll submit 30 editorial shots from a sporting event. 20 fractal backgrounds. Why am I tabbing and clicking all over the page to select "editorial" or "illustration" over and over and over again? Or a series of 10 outdoor landscape shots... they are all gonna be "Parks/Outdoor" and "Nature/Landscape" for me. I think a simple button on the page could give us the option of pasting the data from one image to all the others on the page. This is not an "I'm outta here if you don't do it!" feature request, and it obviously has almost no financial payoff for SS to implement, but the current way just seems very inefficient.

Okay, that's it!
