Yes, congratulations Sean ! And you STILL managed to find time to help me and so many other SS submitters on the BB. I also really appreciate that you are able to say some pretty pithy things that help to put things into perspective on the BB (esp. re quality/ rejection), without hurting anybody's feelings or causing offence in any way.

Many heartfelt thanks -

Auntie

Hi all!

Thought I would share these insights with all of you guys.

Last month I made the decision to go exclusive with shutterstock (deleted all images at the other sites). I have started with SS in February with just a couple of images. Here some stats not about microstock but about SS to share with all of you

I reached the $300 milestone a couple of days back.

It took me 8 month to hit 1650 in downloads (around $380).

My current Daily average is $2.50 (includes weekends).

I have over 700 images online.

My goal is to earn around $500 per month until February 2006.

How was that done, I have learned a lot and made a lot of mistakes since I joint SS. The feedback helped me to constantly improve the quality of the images.

How much hours do I put into shooting good images? If you look through my gallerie you will see that I just have my camera always handy. I do a lot of food (love to cook) and landscape (love to travel), so I would not count that as spending extra time.

Keep on shooting, LouLou.

I am amazed to see how many people actually did feel motivated by this information...

Would it be any help if I published my stats where you guys can download and look whenever you feel like it?

Yeah Forgiss, you did a great thing to share your stats!

As for me, here on SS it took 229 days to me to make $800 and now I have 838 images uploaded, averaging $5.65/day in October.

SS is where I have more pics uploaded and where I earn more money.

Now a little advice to everybody: I find it useful to take a view at other people galleries selecting "Most Popular" in the type of view. In this way I know which are the pics that sell better on SS for each one of us. This is of help for me!

With all this talk of people making big bucks doing microstock, I'm reminded of a quote I saw scratched into the wall of a bathroom stall at my school:

"The success of the few is predicated on the failure of the many."

What I'm trying to say is, we can't all make it rich shooting stock. Some people are naturally going to make lots of money and some people will just eke out a few dollars here and there.

Unfortunately I don't know who originally said that quote, I doubt the vandal who inscribed it on the wall thought of it himself, but google doesn't seem to have any information on it.

Jesus, man, I was dreaming about what I do with the big money I'll make here when I saw your post... The day is over for me now! What makes you so pessimistic today? I was in crash accident today morning when some <censored> man jumped on the road just behind me and I had no chance to stop so I hit him and since I was driving bicycle, not car, I've got the main damage and harldy can use my right hand. And still I have no intention to fall into pesimistic mood. Face to the wind! Take you damn camera and make 50 shots today, and have them all approved.

I'm not a pessimist, I'm just being realistic ;)

One thing that I think would be really slick would be if our stats page showed us what percentile we're in in terms of sales. What I mean is, you'd have number showing you what percentage of shutterstock submitters you've sold more photos than. So somebody just starting out who hasn't sold anything would be in the 0% percentile, and the person who has sold the most would see "100%". It'd allow us to guage our success against the rest.

I think for many people (myself included), this would be a humbling number. For a select few, it'd be a big ego boost ;)

I don't think it would work very well, unless it is run on a short term basis, like 7 days or 30 days or something similiar.... anybody new are going to struggle for months to get anywhere simply because their total images online will be minimal...

But the concept has value..

After all, I think that microstock is the area where size does matter. The more you have pictures in Portfolio, the more you benefit. The number of DL's (or $'s) of course depends on quality also. One could sell two or even three times less than the other with the same amount of photoes in portfolio with the same subject only because the other has perfect portfolio, he's a profesional who lives from photography? while I'm just an amateur bought my first camera 4 months ago. But having Masters degree in physics and mathematics I only have 850$ per month from my primary job. May be I will be so lucky that I get little increment by the end of the year (+150$). But looking at the people like Forgiss with his perfect calculator I understand that even giving that I'm ten times worse than he is and I upload 20-30 pics per week, in about a year I could give up my <censored> boring job and start trying to take money for living from stock. I don't care that somebody was born to make money and somebody was born to sell used socks on the street. If this picture is true than I want to say that I was born to make money. Even if I wasn't than I will reborn shortly.
Sorry for emotions. I've just got news that my bonus has been delayed :D
