As for certified copies:
i know in Belgium this is not a big deal and hope it might work like this for the rest of you as well. You just take the original and the copy to the city-hall/house (=municipality house, lol dunno in english) where they put a stamp and a signature on it and..presto!

This ITIN procedure sounds like a real pain though...please SS, really no way around it?
If i cant get it no way im paying 30% taxes on 0,25cents per picture. Going exclusive somewhere else would be faaar more beneficial. (but i dont want to if i dont have to!)

Yes but not all are approved, just those mentioned on the IRS website.

Hi lissic,

The ITIN form is necessary to fulfill the W8BEN.

Hello,

I am from Germany and cannot believe I have to provide this ITIN number.

ALL agencies I am working with have given up this painful procedure. Even Getty only requires a W8BEN without the ITIN.

Please Shutterstock let me just send my W8BEN without the cost and the pain that is involved in obtaining an ITIN.

This is certainly wrong. Even my american stockbroker never required an ITIN. Check the rules again, please.

I have filled W8BEN for a few companies and never needed ITIN. And none of them withholds any taxes after that.

Yes and no - 30% will be held, but it goes to the IRS - it is NOT retained by Shutterstock.

if a contributor is a non-US resident of a country that doesn't have a tax withholding treaty with USA (such as my country for instance), does that mean that said contributor doesn't have to fill any forms and shutterstock by default retains 30% of his earnings?

if such contributor doesn't fill any of those forms, is that situation OK with IRS, I mean, is it legal and you're not breaking any US law - just forget about 30% of one's proceedings. I wouldn't want to be unable to enter US one day because of some beaurecratic mumbo-jumbo that I didn't know anything about and couldn't do anything about...

I sent several W8-BEN forms to different companies and was never asked for that ITIN.

It's irrelevant (to me) how easy or hard it is to get certified copies done. I'm not prepared to jump through hoops to prove to them I'm a UK resident! Simple.

Are you saying that you can only get your passport certified by an approved IRS solicitor?

My chances of finding one of those in a 3000km radius... ?
Hope you're not saying that.

I have another question..
I am from Romania, we have acording to the irs website a 10% agreement with the king poop US gov, the problem is the SS has enforced an aditional restriction on romanian users' payments [90 days], as we seem all to be deprived of basic human rights and are percieved as thieves without the benefit of doubt. What I'm asking is in what form will the ammount withheld be computed from my earnings as I haven't yet received a payment [going on a month and a half with the site]? Will I be deprived of 10% from the time I get my 1st payment? Or will the calculations be done in a fair way [10% of the earnings I will make starting from now or whenver this decision will be adopted].

Hi
And, if we cant complete the paperwork in time, how do we get the tax back from the IRS? Would we need a lawyer to do that - or do you do that automatically for us?

How to catch a mouse:

Setup 15 traps.
At the trap where the mouse finds that the cheese smells the best it gets caught.

Have fun...
