I'm in the same camp as some of the other Canadians here. I have no intention of giving any information to the US IRS as I pay taxes on my income here already. I didn't get any email about this either. In any event, if this goes forward, this month will be my last payout. I have no qualms about going to more agencies outside the US. |

I'm from Malaysia. Which is the correct form I need to fill in? Form W-7? Does it mean that I need to pay
30% tax regardless whether or not I fill in the form? |

what should i do?
| thegame wrote: | I am from Austria, the table says 0% taxes for images... I will not submit the form: What will happen? 0% taxes or 30% like in the mail?
I am a student and do not even pay income-taxes in Austria as the minimum is 700 Euros per month to pay. So if I am earning more than 1000 Dollars I would have to pay taxes. Why can the US ask for taxes from somebody who is earning small change with a lot of work? What is the minimum income to pay taxes in the US? I am not even working in the US, so why should I pay taxes in the US?
Shouldn't SS pay the taxes? |
i am from mexico, in mexico the minimum is 300000 mexican pesos from royalities per month to pay income-taxes
what should i do?

Given that I don't have the W-7 and the W-8BEN forms then will the 30% withheld amount for US tax affect my total payout despite it being accrued over the past several months? Or will it only affect income from May 2009? As my payout is going to be over 1.4k I would really like to know this ASAP as I might then consider raising my payout amount (before the end of this month) in order to give me ample time to get both forms done, in which case it would only be 5% as I'm based in Australia... |
In the FAQ on the original announcement it says...
Do I owe any U.S. withholding taxes on my earnings from Shutterstock for previous months?
No. If U.S. withholding tax should have been withheld from prior Shutterstock payments to you, Shutterstock is responsible for those withholding taxes. |
Ok not to split hairs here but their answer says "from prior Shutterstock payments to you", not months... I haven't had a payment for a few months now as I was accruing my total and want to make sure that I won't be loosing an odd $400US to the US Tax office.... |
In the email you received it states
Your early June royalty payment will not be subject to withholdings but subsequent royalty payments may be. |

I've found some very interesting things in the web page of the IRS, specially in this pdf: "Withholding of tax on nonresident aliens and foreign entities" Link: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p515.pdf
I think almost everything is explained there. But since english it is not my native language, it turns difficult to me to read it because of the many technical terms.
Someone could help?
Thanks! |

1. It actually says 8-10 weeks if applying from overseas, not 4-6.
2. As already pointed out by others, we need a signed letter from Shutterstock before we can apply (not an e-mail). I hope these are being printed at the moment.

first: why do I have to pay for SS taxes? I receive my small part for each dowload, you have to pay YOUR taxes from YOUR own part, not from my small part... If your business model doesn't work, rise the subscription price or whatever.
second: 30% for taxes?? I don't live in the US, I don't know how much do you US citizens pay for taxes, but 30% sounds like a very high amount of money... at least for an alien like me.
Conclusion: My payout rate has been fell, no matter how do you disguise it. Call it taxes, or whatever you want.
I really would like you to go back and review the situation for foreign contributors (I mean, keeping the payout rate as it is, with no deductions so-called taxes). Is just being fair. |

I don't know what are the answers SS is going to provide but as a resident and a tax payer of UK I declare I will not register and give any info to US taxing authorities. That is not my problem.
I am the content provider and content is produced in the UK. SS is the seller and I get my commission on the product. I own a business in the UK and I am a registered tax payer as a business owner. I am not getting ITIN or giving my details to unnecessary parties.
These are the expenses of SS and SS have to deal with it. If my commission is reduced by %30 for any reason, then I will consider my options and will have a say about it. For now, I am waiting to see what alternative solutions SS can come up with. |

We don't need any letters. We are not employee's. We are not working for SS. I am a non-exclusive who is represented by many agencies. I get my commission and that's it. The rest is not my problem. |

Just last week I went to the tax office and meet my tax account representative asking about the prize I got from foreign country photo competition, and he said no matter what and how many my money deducted for several reason if the government hasn't received my money, I still have to pay tax, so I got double taxes from here too as I pay tax to from SS revenue in my country
And looking at IRS document already make my head dizzy, even I'm not fully understand my country tax document that's why I always get help from my tax account representative.
Talking about legalized passport, I have just called immigration office, and do you how much they charge if I want to have it in two weeks working - I can make several passports for their charge - whooaa how much money I must spend just for this?
Even it said my country has treaty with US for 10% and if I don't fill the document my revenue will be deducted 30%, is that right? and if I fill it, my money will be deducted only 10%.
It is sooo confusing, may be I will just gave up uploading here and let the previous upload staying here, focusing my energy for my work and thinking about being exclusive in one agency. |

And one last thing for now!
%30! WOW!
If all the US residents pay this much on such small amounts, just wow! At least there is a logic in UK about how taxing works! |
