Sounds promising for BSP...

On an unrelated note, is it just me or is this the first time John has described SS as "crowdsourcing"?

I'm curious whether the policies at BigStock will be reconsidered.

Though it's not as bad as another agency's 6-month lock-in, the last time I checked BigStock's contributor agreement stated that after uploading an image, it cannot be deleted (by you) for 90 days. I think the reasoning was they have to be able to recoup the costs of inspecting the images.

So, let's just say you want to go exclusive somewhere, or just don't want to sell with them anymore, you have to wait out 90 days from your last upload.

As far as I know, only two sites have this kind of policy. I've decided to halt all uploads to either, to retain a bit more control of my images.

The lesson I learned, not all contributor agreements are equal. Read 'em before you agree to 'em, not after like I did. ;)

Just double-checked, this is from their forum:

"Also be aware of the 90 day window - you cannot under any circumstances remove a photo from our site within 90 days of pushing it into the Approval Queue. This is to prevent photographers from requesting removal of their photos after our approvers have spent significant time, energy, and resources approving, editing, adding keywords, categories, ranking and reviewing the photos, not to mention bandwidth, marketing and overhead costs. Good job Shutterstock! By the way, I don't know if this is coincidence or not, but my sales on BS have improved since the news was announced. I'm quite optimistic about BS's future.

Now I did :D.
I had 2 DLs (vectors) in the last 3 days. Before I had 1 or none a month. I hope this is getting even better.

Nope, I've had one 50cent sale since the change, but I don't upload there anymore because of the 90 day lockin.

Well, my sales have utterly collapsed. $3-50c in a week from a (previously) successful portfolio with 3000 photos is downright ridiculous. It makes me wonder if they have rearranged the search to finance the purchase by favouring small portfolios that will take ages to reach a payout.

Nope. I have a small portfolio that will take ages to reach a payout and I have no sales either. ;-)

Ouch, that's a pretty cynical viewpoint. I hope they would not do that, but I guess it's a possibility that they will do what is best for them regardless. They did raise the payout amount recently, which I think was probably just a way to avoid paying anything to people with small portfolios, so maybe they are doing something like that. However, I have a small portfolio there and haven't had a download in more than a month so it hasn't benefitted me yet...

We haven't changed anything with the search engine yet - and we would never do this. Search would only engineered to get the buyer the photo they are looking for.
