Wow you guys....!!! Wow, wow, wow...! How does a "lowly photographer" learn how to do this?

I've recently spent a lot of time reading through the illustrators forum. I messed around with Inkscape and couldn't figure out how to make things work. So, last week, I dropped the cash and downloaded Illustrator. I've been spending a lot of time on tutorial sites, reading and learning and working through Illustrator. I'm getting a handle on Illustrator much more quickly than Inkscape. I think this is mainly due to the fact that I've used Photoshop for the past 15 years, so the terminology, hot keys, and functions, are similar to Illustrator.

For what it's worth, I do know how to draw and I do have a decent working knowledge of color theory. I did some raster "illustrations" in Photoshop a few months ago where I began to get familiar with the pen tool and how it operates.

I've been wanting to start with simple silhouettes of some of items that I've photographed on white backgrounds. One would think that such a thing would be the most simple place to start, but I've had difficulty finding tutorials on this.

What I'd like to work up to are backgrounds similar to the ones I've seen here. Is there an online tutorial that talks about how to do this???

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Susan! :)

The backgrounds in this thread are using alot of different techniques, therefor we'll probably need a more precise question, if you want us to support you.
What kind of background would you like to create?
