Just got the new 100mm macro IS canon came out with a little while ago and this is the first time it had met my camera. The stupid lens hood is not working because it's missing the stupid little springs that lock it into place and I feel dumb for not trying it at the store. I'll fix this issue later. Otherwise it's pretty awesome so far.

Sorry Felix. WB is off, focus is a little soft and there's lots of noise. Composition could be improved as well. I'm afraid you'll never make it here. LOL

I'm a Nikon guy but it looks cool anyway. Be sure and post some of your shots with it. I'm thinking about a similar lens sometime soon.

Pharm, that Tamron 90 will fit nicely on that Nikon. I sure like mine.

I await some of your macro shots with it. None of my macro lenses get close enough for me. Their focal range is to far away......

I once used the canon 1-4x Macro - but that was almost too close. . . .but I might get that again.

Hey pharm...

I have the Nikon 105mm 2.8 IS macro lens -- and I absolutely love it. So much that when I dropped it on my garage floor (OWWWWWW) :( I paid to have it fixed again for $450.

It's a great lens.

lens went back today. I was not to pleased with it's performance compared to the previous 100mm macro. Looking into the mp-e 65mm manual focus macro lens which does up to 5x lifesize.

WOW!

REALLY?!?!

You mean what... it's not as good as the 100mm f/2.8?

I'm curious to know why you sent it back and what do you mean by performance in this case? I just bought it because IS really appealed to me.

well the IS is a good feature but useless for macro in my opinion. If I'm shooting insects or flowers or such, I'm either on a tripod or shooting with lights at 1/200 so IS is not needed. It works great when using to shoot portraits for people but the image quality is not better than the older non-IS version. using it at 2.8 still shows bad results and only becomes nice at 4.0. I have a 70-200 which is more useful and as sharp as the 100 macro IS is at 4.0. I got my $1000 back and I'll wait to save up some $$ and just buy the 85mm 1.2L which will get a lot of use. I wish I had not sold my old macro but oh well, it went to a wedding photog and her work is really good so i'm sure she'll put it to good use. Next macro I buy will be the mpe 65mm but not any time soon i think. I also ordered a 7d and refused the package when it arrived due to reading numerous reviews about focus issues and video issues. I usually do much research before I buy but I guess on the 7d I started really researching after I hit the "buy button". luckily only cost me $26 shipping. I needed a back-up to the 5d2 so after refusing the 7d just decided to get another 5d2. I think before any more purchases I need to slow down and smell the coffee. if your thinking about buying the 100 macro IS take your camera body to a store if possible and play with it there before you buy.

Wow. Must be nice to be made of money. ;-)

But about the 7D, I ordered one two. I read every damned review out there, and only found one that had focus issues. The only video issue I came across was the typical rolling shutter issue, but you'll always have that on SLR video, no?

My copy of this lens arrived yesterday and took just a few pictures of stationary objects. The sharpness at f/2.8 was pretty good. At f/4 it's even sharper. The focusing mechanism is a bit slow when in macro mode; it also produces strange noises, but overall it is pretty quiet. My 70-200mm zoom is much quicker when it comes to focusing, but I don't think I should be comparing the two. The IS is useless when shooting ~1/15 sec. or longer. I'll take more shots today and I'll share my feedback with others here.
