I know its a bit off for this place but....How good are those hand held voice recorders? When you listen to the playback is the recording in stereo?

Depends on which one you buy. I have a Radio Shack one that records in mono or stereo. For what I use it for, it works quite well.

Perry neglected to mention that what he uses it for is to record instances of his own flatulence, so YMMV...

LOL you guys always crack me up. :D

Anyhow, thanks for the response. The reason why I'm interested in one is because I would like to use it to mostly record sound. I would rather use something like that instead of caring around my computer and and a mic. It be too much of a pain after all.

The small voice recorders are limited in bandwidth, monophonic, are OK for speech, but not much else. Used to be able to buy large, using the larger philips audio casette, but haven't seen one of those around for sale for a long time, they were much beter frequency response. Unless you jump up into pro gear, or unless you can find a portable hard drive recorder, you are stuck with crap or your computer.

Used minidisc recorders with a small mic are still pretty good... Some of them were quite small indeed.

I want to record myself laughing as I think about you shooting THOUSANDS of photos of ladders, while I frolic and shoot scantily-clad, perspiring, nubile young nymphets behind bars in the state prison. I'll send you a copy. ;)

I am used to recording on cassette tapes from my boombox and home stereo also have a Radio Shack micro cassette recorder and a digital recorder as well! The full size cassette works good the others are eh! But here is another idea to check into (Verizon phone) my Daughter has a Samsung Juke phone and she records birds and the cats and the dogs with it and it is actually very well and has a good playback on it all kinds of people have them because of this abillity for recording and playback! Just an idea to check into they are cheap $9.00 and small. You can then send the recording to one of your Emails on your computer and go from there.

Here's some that I know of:

Zoom H2: Didnt play enough with this little fellow but one of my colleagues has one and it's pretty nifty. Pros: Cheap, Able to record 4 channels in dual stereo mode(never used this tho). Cons: only 1/2" TRS external mic socket, Mediocre audio quality.

M-audio Microtrack: I used this little toy alot, it has pretty good audio quality. Pros: stereo mic included(acceptable for ambiances), cheap. Cons: The included mic is pretty bad quality, battery doesn't last very long.

And finally...

Sound devices 744t: This baby is wonderful. It's got all you need, it's lightweight, superb quality. Pros: Excellent quality, 4 channel input, 4 channel output, XLR sockets, etc. Cons: PRICE!

OR if you want to be old fashioned you could get an old NAGRA 4 analog recorder. It's really fun when you enter a place with this and people look at you like you're carrying a bomb.
