Only if you are a sociopath... it would be the way they view the world.
They are the people in our societies who create the most harm for their own gain! |

What I mean is the language used.

Makes it sound like it would be liberating somehow. I can only guess that's how they feel? Truly terrifying. :-( |

Pay attention and you might find you know a few! Ever wonder why some people have no problem doing what ever it takes to get what they want.
Lying to and manipulating people for their own gain is no problem! |

It's not a good thing because if it became the norm humans would not be able to operate as social creatures (which is what we are). It's a trait that can survive in the gene pool but it isn't a very successful one, though (here's the paradox) a number of successful people probably have it.
I'm sure there are also different degrees of psycopathy. Mild cases may give some behavioural advantage. Extreme cases can be self-destructive ... i.e. get you locked up and unable to pass on your genes. You wouldn't make a good parent, either (the German who imprisoned his daughter as a sex toy was presumably one). |

It's obviously not a good thing, and I sure hope nobody thinks I was saying it was a good thing. I was saying that it almost sounds like the article is making it sound good.
Never mind.
BTW, I think Dawkins' book discusses this vis a vis evolution. |

It is horrible story, and it is beyond my imagination. I was sad the whole morning when reading this. But not now. It might be biased to listen one side of the story. On the other side, maybe the fisherman knew for sure that he could not do anything to help students out of the strong flow of water. Remember, the fisherman is living on water; he has more experiences of the deadly whirlpool than anyone else. That might be why he did not do anything to help the students. It is simply he did not want to die. It might not be fair if basing on his business to blame him for not being a human being. |

I do understand what you mean David... I agree viewing life from that perspective is disturbing. Paradoxically because you do have a conscience, etc.
Paul is right there are varying degrees, most do not go so far as to kill people.
I think the author was successful in getting the point across that sociopaths view it as an advantage that the rest of us are so trusting and unaware of who and what they really are. It makes it far easier to carry out their goals.
Our financial and political system is riddled with them and you can easily see the world wide carnage. If we were not so naive and easily mislead they would not be able to keep those positions.
The likes of Rod Blagojevich, Bernie Madoff and friends come to mind!

This is a terrible story but it happens all over the world in various forms, not only in China. All I can do is hope one day is that all societies will learn to respect all forms of life around us.
As a human, I'm bowing my head in shame. |

Its hard to know the total story here, but I suspect there are aspects to it that Westerners can't easily relate to without walking in the shoes of all in involved. While I don't for a second condone the actions of the fisherman, I can see the conditions in the poorer areas of China leading to such behavior.
As one person related it to me. In the West if someone is poor and desperate, they generally have a certain level of welfare to fall back on. Whereas in many parts of the world if you fall down on your luck, chances are you are looking at disease, starvation and death as likely possibilities. Given this scenario, there are a lot of desperate things that people will do, that they may not do under other circumstances. That is one possibility we are seeing here, where life becomes so stark that its all about "US" or "THEM". Then again they could just be lunatics... ;o) Something to think about. |

Dear Kenliu,
It doesn't take a very long time in most lifetimes to see that such stories, which occur all too often, are just beyond our comprehension. A psychiatrist once said if you can make sense of such acts, you're in trouble yourself.
I am sorry for these children and their families.. |
