Hummingbirds beat their wings 12–90 times per second depending on the species so to completely stop the wing action you really need a very brief burst of light coming from a very short duration strobe.
The caveat is that at 1/32 power, the distance reached by the light is very short, approximately 22 inches. Most photographers who shoot hummingbirds use between 4 and 6 speed lights to light the top, bottom and sides of the bird as well as two for the background. |
I do have a few shots with very little wing movement using good light only but yes, external flashes are at the top of my "to buy" list. ;) |

It's just a fact that Kelly does a pretty darn good job :D
Also - *I* am still a nooby noob, having what, two months and three days under my belt here! It was only today that I broke my first $75 :)
Kelly - maybe one day! *Wishing!*
Wow, Susan... sounds like quite the setup! I just have a camera....LOL... and if I'm lucky, some sunlight :D |

I had a few accepted this morning...
Here's a Lazy Okie Hummer :P
This one's not so lazy...
This one is from a couple of weeks ago, and I like it just because s/he (could be a juvenile male by the patterning under the chin) appears to be reading the SS logo :)

I'm wiped too, it's surprisingly tiring doing the shoots, editing, and key wording.
I hear you, I've become addicted to "waiting for review" too, lol. |

That's me... LOL...
I want to see pics waiting, but I also can't wait to get them through :O So you gotta be working on stuff to have it ready to go once the previous batch clears.
Crazier than heck ;)
Really, I haven't been THAT lazy today, just haven't been getting pics ready. I've watered my flowers, trimmed horses' feet (that about knocked me out, it's tough work), and all kinds of little stuff that's been needing to get done. And now I'm talking to my daughter on the messenger, something that always has priority on Saturday evenings :) Until I tell her to go to sleep...LOL... then I go feed the ponies and THEN I can work on some pics again.... uh-huh...LOL |

It is all about speed lights if you need stop actions on the wings. If I recall correctly the wings beat stop action is flash speed of about 10,000 per second or better. It was a speed assignment in Advance Photo II in college. Today I not chase bird too often. Good Luck, patience, and practice!

My speed lights must have been set just perfect.. no wing movement in this one! :P
Thank you for providing the LIGHT, Sun! :D
Oh, and should I mention it was taken THROUGH a window... extra glass there.. and doubtful quality...LOL
You can actually see the reflection of the window in his eye at 100%.... very distinctly...
This one has some busy wings...
AND...
this guy was soaring straight above me when I was trying to shoot hummers... I didn't *THINK* I look that bad, but he must know something I don't...

Very nice Sari!
I'm sulking right now, they rejected my entire new batch from my "picnic" series for "harsh shadows". I'm going to re shoot it at a different time of day, whaaaaaa! ;)
They also rejected a few of my hummingbirds for LCV, not needed at this time. *scratches head* :( |

Wut??? Not needed? :O
And I know all about sulking today, too. I got some pics of my orange tabby house cat the other day and I REALLY liked them. They approved one out of four - rejected the others for shadows/WB as well. I was heartbroken. Then I submitted another one of the black and white "stray" - and same thing again. I had changed it to a B/W photo with just the black and white cat with his yellow eyes "in color". I thought it was a nice pic, and the effect was neat. Boo hoo. They rejected it. :( Broke my heart a second time in two days :(
*sniff*
And the LCV pops out at the most unexpected times. Just weird.
Anyone got any chocolate? :) It would help...
Or just let the buzzards have at it.... :| |

Aww, I know, I was very disappointed too!
I worked my a** off doing that shoot and I thought they looked great. Funny thing is, I have many very similarly lit images in my port ("high contrast vintage") and they have been selling really well. ;) I think I may have managed to salvage three of them though, we shall see.
I just got a $2.48 OD so I feel a little better, lol! |
