Friends, I can buy the Canon EF 70-300mm f4-5.6 IS USM now, or if I wait a few months (April-May) I can get the Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS USM

This will be my first true zoom telephoto lens, and I am very anxious. Any notes from those that have used either would be helpful on deciding, but will it be worth the wait????

The Canon EF 70-300mm f4-5.6 IS USM is a wonderful lens. Top performance for the money! Ok, focus is kind of slow and noisy and you get some plastic feeling but overall is superb!

If it were me....I would hold out for the quality of the "L" lens. Your going to have that lens for a long time, think how many photos your going to take. Buy the best, and you'll only have to buy it once.

I own the 70-300 IS lens and it is OK, but I am in the process of converting to all L lenses. If you are thinking long term, I think you'll be making a better investment if you wait.

Thanks to everyone for there replies. I think that is what the hard part is. Wait, and be more focused on long term, or get a new gadget/toy.etc now. Is there a massive difference in the focus speed and such between the two? Is it beneficial to have both? I know if nothing else I could have both by the end of this year but by then may have my eye on something new.
