Can anyone recommend me some good 360º panorama stitching software? I'm looking for a good level of quality, either free or cheap, with ability to output to avi / flash etc.
These are the kind of scenics I'd like to do:

Of course, the quality of the original shots is essential, & stable tripod, uniform exposure etc. I guess some HDR might be necessary.
Thanks in advance for any recommendations! |

This is a great stitching software.

I've used it myself and am very impressed with it.

I use Realviz stitcher. Autodesk bought them ought not too long ago. You can download a free trial for 15 days to see how you like it. http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?id=11390049&siteID=123112 It's not inexpensive, but can output to 2 or 3 kinds of video and will even build a web page to show off your creation. Here's one of my stitching projects that I did for my day job. It's slightly modified from the webdesign that is standard with the software, but not very much.

Wow. Thats cool, Tony.
I had a slight problem when I tried zooming all the way back, though.
It locked up and I had to exit the browser.
I'm using IE 8, and had compatability mode turned on, btw. |

Thanks Jerry. It's always nice when work coincides with something you like doing.
The zooming feature is all Quicktime, so it may just be a plugin issue. I haven't had that issue, but IE8 wasn't released when the movies were made. Not sure if that's the issue or not. I just tried one of the movies on IE6 with no problems, so maybe it is the browser. (No, I don't usually use IE6. The computers here at work are still running on 3+ yr old technology.) |

Probably is a plug-in/browser issue. IE8 has a few quirks. |

I've uploaded a number of stitches made with ptgui, that's also very cheap. But it doesn't output to flash or avi.
It also can make 2 dimensional stitches, that is handling multiple rows and columns.
But if you really want to make panoramic images you can't do without a panoramic head! There is a whole series ranging from less than 100$ to more than 2000.
I use this: http://gregwired.com/pano/pano.htm
it's cheap, it's not steady enough to hold an SLR with a slow shutter speed, but it solves all the issues with parallax misalignements - you should only think you are shooting handheld in evaluating the speed.

Thanks for the info. The panosaurus looks good and low price. It says maximum weight 1.4 kg, I've just weighed my 5D + 17-40, weighs in at 1.45 kg so I guess it might just hold it..
I'm downloading the trial of PTGui now, if I use this I'll have to look for some other program to convert to flash or avi. |

I would'nt dare a long exposure with the Panosaurus, but for not too long it's really helpful; here are some examples:
17 images (4 x 4) + 1, camera in landscape orientation, stitched with PTGui, no panoramic head (no significant foreground = no parallax issues).
http://www.shutterstock.com/pic-10588126-high-resolution-mountain-landscape-with-alpine-lake.html
6 images (1 x 6) 18 mm lens, camera in portrait orientation, stitched with PTGui, Panosaurus (a lot of foreground and very wide angle, almost impossible without a panoramic head) - the dirt road was straight

5 images (1 x 5) 50 mm lens, camera in portrait orientation, stitched with PTGui, Panosaurus

I have also some indoors - almost impossible without panoramic head - on other stock agencies.
