Hello,

I will try to explain this, though my English is not so good:

I have two similar illustrations, let's call them img1 and img2.

When I look at my portfolio, to most popular, img1 is first and img2 is no.13.

If I do a search with related keywords (they have the same keywords), for most popular images (all images), img2 is on page 3, but img1 is only on page 22.

How is this possible? It's not a very important question, but I'm just curious.

Thanks.

The most popular search is a strange thing because it depends on many different factors. It is not just what image sells the most but it also factors in the length of time it has been available. So, even though an image may sell more it may not rank as high as one that sells less but has been around for a shorter period of time.

It is either that or something isn't working right! LOL

Thank you Dave.

I know that it depends on many factors, the strange thing is, that I'm talking about the same two images - the only difference is that in the first case I do the search for all images, in the second case I search just my port...

Maybe it's the

I know we are all guessing here, but what is the strategy if it truly works this way; always get newer images shown? That would make sense - the term 'most popular' is just a little misleading.

I'm really new and I find these kinds of discussions interesting. It makes sense to favor a constant flow of new images, but a good image is a good image even if it is a bit older as well. Interesting challenge for the site, isnt it? :) For people who have been here a while, Dave you are a good example, have some images, that whether you uploaded them yesterday or last year, would make money for both you and SS when matched with the right buyer.

SS, or anybody who runs a search engine, can't ever let the strategy out of course or people would immediately game the system.

I think discussions like this, when they surface good ideas, can help both us as providers try to create sellable content and SS fine tune their system to better get that content to buyers.

No one group can think of everything - and judging by the sales of this site compared to others with the exact same content in my case, I'm sure rooting for SS to continue to do well - they are sure doing something better!

Thank you Dave, but it seems that precisely that has changed. I've got two similar images with the same keywords in my port. One was uploaded a year ago and sold only 10 times, the other 3 weeks ago and sold 33 times. According to your explanation the new one ought to be more popular because of the shorter time it's been around, but when I do a normal search using keywords I find the old weak image before the new one. Odd, isn't it? Of course, looking at my own portfolio the new one is the more popular, but that seems to be just for me, not for the buyers.

The logic that you have explained has always made perfect sense to me, but I can't see the point of showing images that haven't done well when they were new as the more popular ones. The ones that sell well right from the beginning will probably be popular one day, but when? In the meantime they are being seen less and less, because they are neither new nor popular.
