.....well so I thought, but of course it did. My hard drive failed, back up mmmmm well MOST of my images were, but I have still lost lots of pictures.

OK so I'm not the best photographer in the world and is not my income, but I am really gutted at losing these pics.

One in particular of tulips that is lost I wanted to use on a greeting card, but at least I can "get it" back as it is one of my SS uploads.

Learn from my mistake, back up all your pics, yes it's a real pain but you never know when a drive will fail.

I keep a second external drive for my pictures and also save them to disc.. I have had 3 computers in the last 4 years which have given up the ghost to viruses even though I have lots of virus detection etc software.. I don't trust anything any more.. :)

Go Macintosh.....Mac viruses are rare. Once you go Mac you will never go back. Macintosh computers are a dream compared to PC's.......excellent graphics and no crashes.

good reminder to back up my stuff over the weekend...

Didi you try bringing the HD in to a specialized recovery company? I've done that once after a physical crash and these guys worked wonders. Will cost some $ though.

cheers

Time Machine.... built into the Mac software is excellent! You don't have to think about it. It automatically backs up everything edit or new from your computer or drive. It's so strange how it works... it gives you a copy of every days work into "outer space" . If yesterday was not the copy you wanted back, you can go back 2 days ago or 30 days ago and get that revision copy. I have mine set to back up every night. Depending on how much room you have on the external drive, it can back up 30 days worth of daily revisions. Some how it doesn't take up the room of each file saved 30x. It only takes up the room as if it was backed up one time but yet it has 30 saved versions for each day. So wild how it works. You can also set it to back up to 2 dives if you need double backups. I love it!

I've used a Mac for ages and ages, and I've always preferred them. But at the same time I've used Windows as well throughout all those years, and it's gotten to the point in the last couple years where it's not SOOO bad any more. It's just a different way of computing. Mac OS just works the way you expect, 99.999% of the time. Very little maintenance or presence of mind needed.

Windows is fine so long as you are moderately computer literate and are mindful of security issues, updating regularly, security software, etc.

I used to use Time Machine myself, but when I had to rely on it when I was reinstalling some backups, something farted somehow, and it wasn't able to restore properly. I had to do a bunch of it manually. A true pain in the ass. So I reverted to my old tried and true method of automated scheduled backups with Retrospect. Never failed me yet.

After using Mac OS X on Intel hardware, going back to old OS 9 is like going back to Windows 3.1. :-)

Ya, Retrospect is one of the best in backing up a Mac. I used that too. Time Machine hasn't failed me, but I did have a few errors that came back to me when it was not backing up, I just fixed it to work again. It never messed up my files and I have been able to retrieve with no problems. It does give warning when it's not working or backing up. I know if you start manually messing with the backup files it will screw up the Time Machine Schedule and have to be done all over again. It is sensitive that way.

Yep. I totally agree. I've been using Macs since 1995 and have never ever had a virus. It's worth the extra money, plus they are fun to use and sooooo coooooool!! Once you go Mac, you never go back! :D
