As a photo buyer I have been very pleased with Shutterstock, so I want to thank the photographers and reviewers.
That said, it appears that many SS photographers believe all business people do is walk around flashing the "thumbs up" and giving each other "high fives" all day. You know what? We don't... ever.
There is an over abundance of these cliche shots on Shutterstock, so please save your money and don't pay models to pose for those shots any more. |

While these poses may sometimes be trite, please understand that some designers are not always looking for the most edgey, innovative or truthful imagery. We completely understand and agree with your concern, but we encourage our photographers to continue contributing a wide range of styles.
Best,

This made me laugh -- it made my day. I understand what you're saying, though. As a buyer, I rarely purchase any of the images related to the poses you've mentioned. I like to purchase images of business people actually doing something like communicating, in a meeting, looking at a computer, whatever.
However, I do know that a lot of the "thumbs up" photos, although clichéd, are used widely in large-scale advertising like billboards and commercials. This is obviously because the message communicated by such images is very brief and also very effective. Thumbs up = happy person = positive outlook = more sales. It's a simple formula that will forever work. |

oh, you mean - corny stock photos. Yeah, as a designer myself, I know exactly what you mean. You know what's even worse? Designers that actually use those in their layouts-LOL |

What money? We get 25 cents per sale. That doesn't leave much budget for models, locations, props etc... and that is probably the reason for all the cliche shots. They are easy, fast, cheap and within the budget.
That said, I'm also shocked at how often I see this very type of image in an ad layout or on a billboard. Also surprised to see these seem to sell better than the images in my portfolio where I have been able to gain access to cool locations and get "real life" shots such as a pilot in his plane, singers in a nightclub (using studio lighting) etc.
I do appreciate the feedback... and I agree... but there are factors that press microstock to be what it is. |

Yeah... I was miserable in the corporate world... (me at desk with gun to my head - that's a REALISTIC stock photo) ; )
But as a designer, I'd say 95% of the "Business People" my clients WANT & REQUEST are happy, high-fivers...
It sucks, but we're slaves to the clients' whims and the photogs are simply shooting what sells |
