Talk me out of buying:
Canon 30D + EF 70-200 f2.8L IS USM.
If you have a better combination sugestion[less expensive].

I considered buying the XTi to save money and I admit tempted by the 10.1 mp, but I am afraid they will be too small & light with above lense. I only own the kit lense.

My old 6.2mp Rebel quit at 24,687 Clicks this week.
I believe I will be able to use the same CF Card but not the batteries.

well if you realy want it , ok.

you can buy canon 350d + canon 80-200 f2.8 L , they both you can find for about 1000$ and your choise was about 2600$ , and combo 350d + 80-200 will give you sharper images wide open , and it will have nicer color and maybe little better bokeh , and it cost less than half..

but you know that you will louse USM focus , 30d body had little better af (but not fantastic) , no IS so handhald in lower light can be problem......

but in end i am sure that 350d + 80-200 will give you better pictures (you will need to work just a bit little harder).

If you can afford it buy the best you can. Otherwise you will end up replacing it in the future. Oh - another way to look at this - if this is a hobby buy the cheaper stuff. If you look at this as a business buy the pro stuff. (I am not a Canon guy so I don't know if the 30D is pro, I do know L series is pro Canon glass though).

Got the 70-200mm IS. Great lens. But have you looked at the new f4L IS version? MTF chart shows it to be very promising.

Also, take a closer look at the 5D. Even more MPs and way less noise.

Hi...

I had a 70-200 F4 and it was an awesome lens... the 2.8 IS i guess it can only be better :)

As for the 30D, i like it... i have a 20D and don't feel the need to change it for the 30D because it doesn't have that much added value, but from a 300D the difference is huge, not only in functions, but in size, dials and commands also...

As for the size, my hand are not that big (at all) but i always feel that the 350D and now the 400D are for kids... i can't get used to something that small...

The 30D has a good size.... and for a couple hundred bucks you can buy the grip (i did that) which gives you a very nice balance to the whole camera as well as "infinite" battery time and the handy portrait controls...

That would be a possible choice for me... so, i can't talk you out of it... It's an excellent camera if you can't go for the 5D.

edit: By the way, i'm not 100% sure, but i guess the batteries for the 30D are the same as the ones for the 300D. Their power is different, but they work with both cameras. Canon makes many of these "props" compatible... It's Nikon who makes 10 cameras and has 10 equally shaped batteries that only work with ONE model... bah

The lens is a definite buy, sure thing that you will
never need to upgrade that one!

Have a 20D myself (and that lens) and I am very happy about it.
A friend recently bought the 30D and I would really enjoy the
RGB histograms and the larger LCD screen. Bodies and
sensors will evolve rapidly, the last 2 Megapixels is not going
to dramatically change your image!

D200 and D80 have a battery with 3 barrets
you can use the battery in a D50/D70 but not the other way around. that 3rd barret is used for the exact metering of the level of the battery (in percentage)

I went into Ritz just a week or so ago and was told the same thing as Cyril is stating. I have the D70s and am considering buying the 200, because it uses the same CF cards, and D80 does not, it uses SD like the D50.
The Nikon D200 battery is useable in the D70, but not the other way round, because of the added feature that the D200 battery has. Possibly in a pinch one might be able to use the D70 battery, but would not have the battery life feature?
