Hi MHD!
I checked out gimp but it seemed a bit confusing. I'm not familiar with source code, etc etc.
My other concern with that program is it affecting the stability of my computer. I work on crucial audio editing programs for work and can't sacrifice the functionality of my pc ... any thoughts?
(I guess when I buy a MacMini, I won't have to worry about my photo stuff being on the same machine! Til then.... worries!!!!!)

GIMP is open source, but you don't need to bother yourself with the development stuff. Find the Automated Installer and use that. |

Others have mentioned Gimp and how it is easier to use now. Someone just hacked it to make it look and be set up like Photoshop. I don't have a link but if I find that link again I will post it.
Alternately there are other ways to get PS without paying out the nose. Don't go with the latest version get PS7 just as good IMO. Of course there is the illegal way of getting it- but you can see about buying it from someone who maybe upgraded or doesn't use it anymore. You are in NY and chances are that you are a student of know a few. You can buy it for a student price at a college bookstore. I think I paid 200.00 for my version of PS7 about three years ago. Also be on the look out if you are buying some electronics, sometimes you can get a lower version and then pay for the upgrade. One of those shopping shows was selling a labtop with PS6 as a bundled software the other day. |

Sorry about the double post, but I just found the link. It looks like the Gimp hack is for mac users. Maybe someone will be kind enough to hack it for windows some day.

I've given away four copies of Elements that have come with equipment I've bought, and one of Elements II - I've seen people on other forums giving away unnecessary disks too - and Elements, or even Photoshop LE, is still a pretty handy imaging package...
