I am living in Dubai now, (working as an Air Traffic Controller), but I am actually a Capetonian.
My wife is from Ceres and the two rugrats were born here in ArabLand. |

Excellent!
Maybe you can advise me then...
We will be doing a trip to Europe in September, and we wanted to go past US to buy equipment... How does Dubai compare pricewise (another photographer said I should rather go that way round...)
sorry for the bother! |

Wow, that sounds like a lot of effort though! please don't go out of your way!!!
I am basically just looking for the price on a Canon 1Ds mk II, the Canon EF 100-400 F4 L IS, and the Canon 580EX flashguns
Currently the price difference between NY and SA is about R34,000 on the 1Ds mkII so taking a little trip is worth my while!
Like I said, please don't go out of your way for the info... If you run into it, just send it allong!
Thanx |

Sean, can you detour via Hong Kong? That may be way out of the flight path, I realise, but it's worth asking the question... that's acknowledged by many as both the cheapest, and in having the most competitive market (there is a dedicated camera market held in the underground carpark of a major hotel, where the traders will see you look at an L and start competing to get your sale... :-) )
Cheers,

Stuart E, I have heard the same.
Do you know if one can get an International Warranty for Canon when buying in Sinagapore ? |

You can't get an 'international' warranty card on digital bodies - you might on the 1D, but I doubt it, because that's not Canon's policy - what you can get is a 'local' warranty, which will be honoured if it's bought from a legitimate Canon dealer in that country - a lot of people misunderstand the limitations of Canon's warranties - if you buy a grey import, e.g. a Singapore issued 20D, in Belgium, your warranty won't be valid - if you buy a Singapore issued camera in Singapore, from a Canon dealer, your reciept is actually the proof you need to go with your warranty if you want Canon to honour the warranty in Belgium... Canon's warranty concerns are to stop the grey marketing of exported camera's around the world, not to get out of fixing a genuine failure with a piece of equipment...
You DO get an internationally valid warranty with a lens... unless you buy a localised US lens... DOH... that means, if I order a lens from say B&H, if I order the 'genuine' US lens, I won't have a warranty in Australia, if I buy their 'import' lens, I will get a warranty... yeah, I know, that's just plain confusing...
Luckily, companies like Mack exist - they can give you a three year warranty that will be covered by Canon in your country, on any new digital body... it does cost money, but less than the difference between a camera in say, Hong Kong, and Australia... this is a common method of getting a dSLR on the cheap... Hong Kong is another place where you have to be careful about who you buy from, as not all 'Canon' dealers are legitimate dealers - even though they may show the Canon logo, etc... part of their dodgy copyright control over there unfortunately...
Cheers,

Stuart,
I have bought from Hong Kong before but find that some things are cheaper and some are more expensive...
I spoke to Canon SA about a week ago, According to them, If I buy from B&H I neeed to buy what they call the "Imported" products, or I must buy out of Europe. They will honour the warranties
But effectively, If you buy a product overseas and have paid the import duty and relevant taxes, by law, the company needs to honour it (This is South African Law) All my cameras have been bought overseas (America, Europe and Hong Kong) and Canon has honored the warranties when I needed to take them in... (mind you, the guy at front desk says they can't help you, then you have to get them to call a manager, display proof of payments of taxes and Imports and then they usually take it in, no probs)
This is South Africa though, I don't know what the rest of the world does... I suppose that is why the Mack warranties were created! |
