If i got that right, the "Super" size edition is an auto generated resize in case the original ("large") version has dimensions less than 4000 pixels (on its longest side). That means that if you upload a photo that is larger than for example 4000 x 4000 it will not appear as "super". If you upload the same, downsized to 3000 x 3000 it will be resized to super.

This is correct.

braniffman, I think there must be a threshold size beyond which they don't bother offering supersize. My bigger original images don't get supersized. 5DmkII full size files are whoppers to start with so I'm guessing that SS don't feel the need to do the daft upsizing interpolation with them. I may of course be wrong ;)

You might be right, I appreciate your input, thank you!
I dont think this is true because if it were there would be a whole lot of people using a smaller camera because the only way to get an EL (enhanced license) is to have large and super TIFF files and there are a lot of people using the 5D.

Barry, I think you are wrong... I have over 1500 files that span the whole gamut between 4MP and 21.1MP and the result is extremely consistent: anything over about 15MP (5000x3333) is NOT upsized to Super. Period.

Your claim that the "only way to get an EL is to have a super TIFF" is pure speculation. If buyers care so much about the quality of their EL purchases, they should know that the Super size is an upsized (lower quality) file.

As proof, check out this file of mine: http://www.shutterstock.com/pic-54584602/stock-photo-high-res-panorama-of-the-sierras-taken-from-smith-peak-in-yosemite-national-park-california.html. The ORIGINAL size is over 42MP and it is offered as LARGE. Which clearly means that anything that comes in SUPER is an upsized file and not original size/quality.

+1
This has been discussed on the forums before. Somebody else asked more or less the same question and got a reply from SS.

Hello braniffman,

We perform an interpolated upsize to images that are exactly 15MP (or smaller). This is precisely the "Super" size option you are referring to.

If your submitted image is larger than 15MP, then your original file is sufficient and our system will not interpolate it to a supersize option.

If you have any further questions, please contact submit@shutterstock.com

Is that right? I thought EL was purely a usage license and had nothing to do with size. As a general rule I downsize stuff here to 12MP or so, since that is big enough for just about anything, anyway. Where can I see the requirements for images to be available for EL sales?

I think that's refering more to the fact that people would want larger files for EL's. As I said, pure speculation. Anything over 15MP should be more than enough for most purposes. Absolutely all submitted files are available to buyers for EL purchases.
