Scientist's working with the famous Hadron Collider in Switzerland believe they have found the "God Particle" and will be making their findings public today in an announcement later this afternoon.
If it is true think of the implications it will have and what it will do for the scientific community. |

Very cool stuff. A couple years back I read the book "The Theory To Almost Everything" by Robert Oertor (it is about the Standard Model Theory) very interesting stuff. |

If you read the release you will see that they have narrowed down the range in which they believe that the Higgs Boson (God particle is just general media hype). It isn't a discovery yet but they are getting closer.
FWIW this is something along the lines of finding "the electron". Not exactly going to change everything in the short term. It would just demonstrate the extreme robustness of the standard model of particle physics.
It would be more accurate to describe it as the "anti god particle" actually as this goes a long way to demonstrating that scientific inquiry and basic research using the scientific method is extremely powerful in observing and predicting characteristics of the world around us. Our understanding of the universe is truly amazing when you look into it. Much more than the "god made it" crowd would get.

Wonder where this world is going when science is claiming God and Religion is claiming scientific proof of a belief.

I'm digging up this old thread again, because physicists at Fermilab have announced the "strongest indication to date" of the existence of the Higgs Boson. Here's an article.
And, dammit, I wish people would stop calling it the God particle. The term was just a wisecrack from a physicist, and I'm sure he regrets ever muttering it. But you know how the press are; once they latch onto a phrase they just can never let go. |
