Hi guys,

I love this shot I took in Dublin last year. I love it because it shows real life. A man asking for money, his head bowed down and people passing by ignoring him.

I think this would pass editorial with a caption something like:

DUBLIN - OCTOBER 28: Number of homeless people in Dublin growing because of economic crisis. Over 2,000 people are homeless in the Greater Dublin Area October 28, 2011 in Dublin, Ireland.

Thoughts?

It's nice and might fly but. Im not reading Homeless.Looks like a guy trying to sleep with a coffee cup in Hand.Im only comparing it to Images I've seen photojournalists take.Good capture. But what makes a news Photographer is an Instant story with an Image. You know whats going on But does it read.? Not sure. Lets see what others think.

Agree with Laurin.

When i first saw it i thought the guy was asleep on the street as well and didn't see him begging for money.

Go to Katrinas port and see if she put some of hers up she has been doing homeless shoots and just did one in NY.

It might be because I live in Dublin, to me that is what homeless people look like in Dublin. How about this one ?

Second one.

For someone homeless he sure has a nice sleeping bag and coat as well as his backpack and hat.

Just doesn't quite say homeless maybe it's the cultural difference.

There are people in County Down who could pass more as being homeless then this guy unless their lifestyle has changed and they all got rich over the years.

You dont sleep on a doorstep if you have a home ;-) And he is not paid to sleep there either :) Nah, these are real homeless people in Dublin. Must be a European thing then.

I don't think a photo of a homeless guy is going to pass editorial. There's not enough hook.

Check in this thread the photo of digiandalf http://submit.shutterstock.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=120190. If the caption is good enough, it can be accepted.

Yeah, I commented in that thread, too. We were talking about landmarks. This is different. I have some experience knowing what photos can get accepted as editorial at Shutterstock. You can try if you want. It doesn't hurt anything. Just don't do it for your first 10. After that, it won't matter.

He doesn't look homeless or too distraught to me. I would like it better with a much shallower depth of field. In your image, my eye goes to the guy on the ground, then quickly to the face of the guy walking toward the camera, then to everyone else in the image. If the DOF is shallower, they become unimportant and the man sitting on the ground becomes the all-important subject of the image. They become blurs and practically non-existent, leaving him alone and isolated (metaphorically AND literally). To me, to say "homeless", it needs to convey a sense of darkness, loneliness, despair, etc.

My sloppy "remake" of your image:

Looks good indeed. Thanks. Unfortunately editorial photos may not be tempered with. But next time I will keep that in mind.

Ah yes, I forgot about that. Reshoot it with a willing model so they can sign a release. Take a friend and dress them up as you want to and then you don't have to submit it as editorial.
