Hi everyone,
First off apologies for asking a question that has probably been talked to death here, but I couldn't find it using keywords--too common.
I've gone back to shooting raw, mainly for the sake of keeping atop my white balance. Naturally the RAW files aren't as sharp as the jpegs, so I'm wondering what people use to sharpen them prior to turning them in jpegs & submitting.
I would guess unsharp mask, but I wanted to be sure.
TIA

If you're shooting and processing RAW, then apply whatever sharpening you may need in RAW. Like anything else, don't go overboard with it, but a bit of lite sharpening in RAW is the best place for that step. |

Cool. What process do you prefer?
Or does it vary?

I use ACR in Photoshop. Never tried any other RAW processor. |

Thanks Triceratops. Only thing is that when I open the sharpen dialogue in my ACR it states that it sharpens for "preview only" which I presume to mean doesn't impart any lasting change.
Am I misinterpreting that?

No idea. I've never seen that message. What RAW convertor are you using? |

I know your question was about processing raw and sharpening but you mentioned white balance. I normally process the jpeg but use the expodisc to sort out the white balance. The camera always records jpeg and raw but I rarely process the raw

Thanks for the tip, Mark, but I've never heard of expodisc.

This is correct and is the default. You can go into preferences and switch so that the sharpening applies when you convert.
Go to PS>EDIT>preferences>camera RAW. Second drop down box is option to change from preview.

Mike is right of course, but remember where this selection is, because if you are going to do ANYTHING in PS after making adjustments in ACR you need to turn this back to the default, because sharpening ALWAYS needs to be done as the very last step in any workflow.
I like Russ do most of my processing in ACR including sharpening, unless I am going to stitch many images together to make a panorama, or if I am going to do any layering, or an HDR. In these latter cases, I switch it off and after doing everything in PS that I am going to do, I use SMART Sharpening as it is better than Unsharp Mask. |

I agree with Jeff, always sharpen as last step if you need to do so and always sparingly and selectively.
