The rice shot is under exposed as well. I played around with the shot a bit to give you a different look at how to compose it. I couldn't do everything I wanted because of the basic composition but I think you will see the difference.

Basically I just tried to take it out the thing I call I have to show it all itice. You don't always need to show everything that you put down in total. It often makes it look very styled and forced.

If I could I would have moved the middle rice bowl closer to the one in front and I am not really sure just why the candle is there. You are basically showing several bowls of rice with an Asian ying and yang theme. I think the candle would fit better in a not so food related shot/

More like this - but without the candle?

I appreciate the input.

This one is better. Things are not so spread out. One of the biggest problems when people try to "style" a shot is that they perfectly place things in spots that are more or less evenly spaced. Often what that does is give a fake over styled appearance. I like to put it this way. When you go for a haircut (mainly guys I think) we go in and want a hair cut but we don't want it to look like we just got a hair cut. We want it to be natural looking. The same goes for styling. Don't over do it.

Yes, loose the candle. I think I am going to get a tee shirt made up that says "If it doesn't belong, don't put it in."

Now with the new shot you posted once you loose the candle frame it so the bowls are toward the left side of the image to leave some copy space in the upper right corner (rule of thirds).

Also do you have any darker wood surface you can shoot on? The one you are using now is too similar to the color of the rice. Makes everything too matchy matchy. I would love to shoot this on some old weather beaten wood planks.

The other thing I would do is put more rice in the bowls. If you don't have enough rice to do this take smaller bowls, turn them upside down in the bigger bowl and pour the rice over that. The upside down bowl acts like a filler so you need less rice (a little food photography trick).

Any thoughts on the iron box?

x2

Rather than finding stuff to take pictures of, you need to work on making images that are USEFUL to image buyers. Think of ads, news clips, calendars, stuff like that. Could any of these images end up there? If not then you need to shoot something different.

rinder99 - Background and Texture are numbers 4 and 28, respectively, in the top 100 searches. Seems to me this would qualify, no?

Because your box is not represented as flat its use as a background to me would be diminished. Plus keep in mind that SS is rejecting a lot of background shots because they have so many in the database.

Agree with Dave, backgrounds and textures fil the complete image rather than being part of of something.
Also , think about 3 things this could be used for to convey a concept, service, or product, I cannot?

No. and good luck trying to get any background accepted. Thats really old school stock my friend. Just to easy to do so they have 9 million of them.Yours is not really a background. These of mine out of maybe 50 in my port are Backgrounds. They did well 6 years ago.I like rusted things also. But converting them to B&W work better for Print sales.
