Okay with some convincing from Laurin I am giving this footage stuff a shot, I am a complete newbie when it comes to this stuff, so sorry if my questions seem really basic. I was experimenting today with my Canon 7d. I shot a quick video of my little girl playing with her dog just to mostly see if I had the right editing software to simply cut the video to the right length.

I uploaded it to my computer and it is a quicktime file and I seem to only be able to view it with quicktime. I don't have any editing capabilities with quicktime. I do have Windows Movie maker but I can't seem to open in windows movie maker. Am I doing something wrong or is there other free software I can use that is compatible with quicktime. As I am just starting out all I really want to be able to do is cut the video to the right length I don't need anything fancy.

Hi there,

I have a Mac now but with PC I am pretty sure you just open your editor first
(moviemaker) then IMPORT your clip into Collections. I am also pretty sure that you don't have to change the quicktime format to do this... it has been a while since I used the PC (Thank Goodness...Tee Hee!) so I could be way off on this!

I am trying my hand at video too! Good luck to you and I hope we will both be uploading our vids soon!!!

Thanks I think I figured out the problem but it opens another question. I have to install the right codec but I don't know which on that is or how to even find it. Anyone know about this stuff?

But the pro license for Quicktime it's $30 it will let you edit. Forget movie maker, it won't play apple and Quicktime won't play. Wmv files.

Thanks I think you are right that is my best option and $30 is very reasonable. So I will give it a shot.

Just trying to help. All you need to play .mov is Quicktime for Windows or DIVX. Both free. To edit is a different story. But there are loads of free converters and editing software under the GNU licence. Open source.

Of course. I know how she feels. I was so confused at the beginning as I had PC also. I use neoscene and aunsoft for avchd files to prorez422 on Mac now.

Hi Jen,

I am just exploring getting into video using my 60D. I found this topic on SS which seems to answer most questions and takes you through the workflow.

Thanks Mike I will give it a look. I finally got a couple videos cut yesterday. Only 1 is usable but I am learning. My goal is to get 3 or 4 a week done and keep it really simple at first. We will see how it goes. I am also trying to upload 25 photos a week so it's a lot to take on.
