hi guys, im gonna be in death valley next week. its a 2 day/1 night side trip from vegas so i dont have a lot of time and want to plan what time i do have wisely.
do you have any advise for locations and must have gear for this type of shooting? im thinkin of mesquite dunes for sunrise. but i also want to shoot badwater salt flats but i guess that would have to be sunset and night time.

I like late in the afternoon for Mesquite dunes. I think this gives the best time to show off the ripples and patterns in the sand. Early morning is good but I don't think as good.
Be careful at Badwater Flats. It can be one of the hottest places in Death Valley and there is no shade. We were in the general area last week coming back from the Monument Valley workshop and it was 104 degrees. Make sure you have plenty of water with you.
If you want to shoot something different how about shooting the waterfall in Death Valley? Many don't know about this place but it is called Darwin Falls. It is mile west of Panamint Springs Resort off Highway 190.
For your gear I would make sure I have a general zoom somewhere in the 17-55 range and one that covers 70-200. Some extra things you may want to bring is a ND grad filter and a polarizer.
Not sure if you have ever been there before but if not make sure you have comfortable shoes preferably hiking boots, have plenty of water, don't wander too far from your car and don't go where you are instructed not to go. It won't be anywhere near its hottest this time of year but it still can be very hot.

i would suggest you to go to Zabriskie point for sunrise shots and bad water for sunset shots, i was there last month and i have posted few shots in the below link from Badwater, Zabriskie point and Mesquite Dunes. The salt lake shots are from Badwater, 3 from Zabriskie and 1 from Mesquite.
As dave mentioned you will need both wide angle and zoom lens at all these three locations

i love the idea of the falls dave. i also have been told titus canyon is a cool drive to the ghost towns. a few yrs ago we took a drive along gold camp road and it was a bit ho-hum. im wondering if the titus canyon might be sorta the same deal and since its one way, i hate to get on it wishing i could go back.
i'll bring all my lenses. and just order some cokin filters.

i went to the ghost town on my way to betty to fill gas. I did like it so much, drive was beautiful.

Heres stovepipe wells at dusk and furnace creek at dawn. Like said said BE CAREFUL they don't call it death valley for nothing. You get into trouble. Your alone.

You can change the size of the thumbnails to LARGE in the Display Preferences on the upper right side in your gallery. Maybe you changed it without knowing.
