I am currently in the marked for a new camera. Looking at the D7000, I think it has good features for the price. Not so sure about the 18-105 kit lens that comes with it.
Any suggestions?

Don't buy it as a kit. Most of the cheaper kit lenses are just point of frustration and you will end up spending more money on better glass. Rather just buy the body and then buy your good lens to go with it. |

If you like zooms and have a good amount of money, go for two good zooms.
If you have some budget limitations, prefer not so big lenses or like primes, go for 3 nice primes.
For landscapes a good old wide will be OK. You end focus most of the time by deep of field.
I'm not on the brand, but it will work for any brand. I'm in the second option. |

Thank you very much for the reply, I am on a budget, but I think I want to buy a couple zoom lenses. I wonder if the Tamron or Sigma lenses are as good as the nikon lenses. |

Each lens should be considered on its merits. You cannot state that all lenses of one brand are better than all others. Each one has a personality.
You will like the D7000, I'm sure. It does a lot of things well. I just sold mine along with Nikkors. Now I shoot with a Fuji X100 and plan to get a, X-PRO 1 soon. The RF style suits me better but the D7000 was really very good. |

The X1pro. sounded great. I played with it last week. Felt very cheap in my hands. |

No! I don't want to hear that. Another illusion shattered. After having owned more than a few Leicas, the X100 feels cheap, too. It is cheap, which is why I can afford it in these wonderful retirement days. |

I agree that good glass is the best move (if you can afford it) and the 50mm/1.8 is the best of both worlds. But sometime now or later you will need a walk around lens and the kit lenses are fine. But being old school I tend to stay away from the current plastic ones. I go for old school AFD lenses from the film era. But you'll need a body with built in focus motor. |

My dream is a Nikon mount Leica lens. Sigh! |

90% of what I do is with the ancient D1x and a 55mm/1.8 and 135/2.8 Mamiya Sekors(1960s era)M42s bequeathed to me by my late father. Results are only limited by my skills. |
