Containers
The containers (or file extensions) we accept are: .avi, .dv, .m4v, .mov, .mp4, .mpg, and .mpeg.

Codecs
We accept a number of video codecs and some of the most popular codecs we support are 8bps, cinepak, h264, Photo-JPEG, Motion-JPEG, PNG, and Prores.

I have tried to send a couple of h264.mp4 files but it didn't work. I have got this on my contributor page instead: "You recently uploaded a file of type mp4 to the submit FTP site. Only JPEG, TIFF, and EPS images with extensions of .jpg, .jpeg, .tif, .tiff, and .eps; and video files with extensions of .avi, .mov, .dv, .mpeg, and .mpg are allowed."
Please fix the mp4 uploading process.

Thank you.

Me too with an .mp4 file ... It's totally frustrating uploading footages on Shutterstock. I've tried Filezilla and CrossoFTP as well, but both of them have failed the upload. I've also changed the "ftp automatic processing" setting on my account to "NO" as somebody suggested, but the upload doesn't work at all.
I REALLY don't understand how it is possible that the technical staffs don't fix this issue.

Can't you put an H.264 movie in a .MOV container? Perhaps try that.

I'm not experiencing any issues uploading and keywording lately.

Yes, it's what I've just tried to do, after other two hours of uploading, because you're not allowed to rename the file on the server.

Now, I'm waiting if I'll see this new footage in the content editor ... and I suppose I'll be waiting for a while.... ....

:( :( :(
VERY DISAPPOINTED.

Hi everybody,
Right now, I've checked the content editor and I've seen my footage ready to be edited.
It's really sounds good!!!

Thank you guys. It seems MOV container is the way to go now.
Shutterstock, please keep us updated on when the MP4 container would work.

Indeed. Old thread, but still important.

Since workflow is everything, I wondered the same thing since I started using Final Cut Pro X. Its export menu is ridiculously shrinked down - even iMovie has more options because it accesses the global Quick Time export menus and therefore can easily export Photo-JPEG files that were the standard here.
For FCPX, you have to buy the Compressor App, create a Photo-JPEG preset and access this preset from within FCPX. Of course, there have to be different presets for clips with and without audio.
At least, with the most recent version, you can access these presets directly from FCPX without launching Compressor.

The question remains: Is Photo-JPEG still the preferred codec, even if it's not the only one accepted? From FCPX, many other formats would be much easier to export, especially H.264.

So what do buyers say and want? Is it okay to optimize workflow and drop Photo-JPEG for H.264? Or does the buyer have more problems with this format? I would think so, because it's highly compressed, and the video and audio streams are intertwined, so editing these clips is more of a pain for customers if they don't have a hell of a machine to do so.

Is it worth it? Or should I stick with Photo-JPEG?

An extensive shutterbuzz article on that would be really helpful for contributors.

Best regards,

Christian
