When using the crop tool you can take any size selection and it then sizes the area taken out to 500x500px in your case. This is the same if you crop a large area or a small one, all you get is the final saved image is at 500px x 500px.

If you are using PS the square marquis tool is the easiest way to alway get a 100% crop.

Select the tool, then on the top bar put in 500 X 500 px and choose fixed size from the drop down box, then go to Image > crop and your done. No need to zoom image and crop will always be 500x500 px

I do think the pony in the original is a tad dark - but ONLY a tad -- the legs are black, so they're supposed to be fairly dark (a bay pony always has brown coat and black legs, mane and tail).

The face hairs look "artifacty" probably because the pony lives outdoors and plays with other ponies, more or less, and so not all the hairs are nice and smooth and the same length - some of them will look like they've been cut off - because they HAVE -- one of mine has a face that sometimes looks like someone put it through a lawnmower - because most of the hairs look DINGED from bites from other horses.... horses do play hard!

Maybe a slight fill light would help, though, and also give more life to the eye on this side of the horse --- just my 1/2 cent's worth...

Yes this is a wild pony and they do look rather scruffy and well worn. Thank you okiepony for your advice. By the way I love your horse/pony shots especially with the cats as well.

You're welcome, Donna -- ours live outside 24/7 and especially the geldings look like it, too - mostly because they just have too much fun at it! LOL ;)

Hi Donna, you look like you have got the crop right. The bit we need to see is the eyes. With animal shots getting the eyes in focus is the key.
