A friend of mine has some artwork (paintings and such) that he wants me to photograph digitally so he can print and sell, and I've never done it before. How do you do it?

A few questions I can think of...

1. My sharpest lens is a 50mm prime (my others are two cheap zoom lenses). Is this OK to use?

2. I'm not quite sure how to light them. Is it as simple as lighting them with two equal light sources coming in at 45 degrees from the left and right?

3. As for the light sources, I have incandescent bulbs (using clamp lights) with an 80A filter, daylight balanced fluorescent bulbs (also using the clamp lights), and Vivitar 283 speed lights. Which ones would be better? I have a grey card to custom white balance any of them.

4. Is it OK to give them the raw harsh lighting, or should they be diffused?

I appreciate any other suggestions!

Get on the same plane with the same light and take the picture.

Laurin will probably be around soon to answer this. He has photographed hundreds of his paintings which he has submitted here.

A word of warning, although his method of teaching is good, I'd recommend you take it with a pinch of salt.
