Ok, here's one I took this weekend, trying to apply some of the advice given previously.
Kit lens @ 34mm
f5.6
1/400
ISO 400

Mainly I was looking to improve on DOF, focus, foreground/background and some nice clouds :)

All feedback much appreciated, Pete.

The noise from shooting at ISO 400 is evident. Drop your ISO to 100 and re-shoot.

+1

And use f/9-f/11 for a bit more DOF.

Read this again. "Before you go getting all kinds of tips on how to do post processing and trying to fix things make sure you get the best possible shot you can in the camera. The goal in photography is to get the image captured correctly and then to enhance the shot if needed in post processing. "

~ I'm working on it :), following post is same shot @ f9 / ISO 200 with noise reduction. I take your point and will re-shoot when I get time. Hope this is an improvement?

kind regards and ty for feedback. Pete.

Don't use Noise reduction. Use the blur tool at 20% only on skies. Noise reduction will Kill Images. turn it off in camera as well.

Damn that's a fast reply :) ~ noise reduction is switched off in camera, I tweaked this image on the chromatic slider, only noise I could see was in the 'shads' and on the pesky church door.

I'm new to 'post-processing' ,learning I hope lol and again your feedback invaluable, thankyou.

Only have DPP and LR4 to work with at the mo, and why did the last upload (crop) display as download??? any ideas? cheers Pete.

You are using a Canon so shoot at ISO 100 not ISO 200.

Thanks on the copyright thing, can I just clone the 'names' out or is that a no no? "Looks soft" ~ needs to be sharper?

cheers Pete

Pete, yes you can clone out the names.
I don't think the image is too far off the mark, you could apply just a little judicious sharpening, and see what that looks like, but I have seen images that were softer accepted.
