What do you think about Canon EF 24-105/4 L IS USM lens, upgrade on EOS 600D.

All my shots so far I was made with Canon EF 50 1.8.

Im lucky because I have students that come in with all the cameras and lenses. In a controlled environment and processing. the Canon 24-105 was a bit soft at the long end and a bit of barrel distortion. But thats normal in Long range focal lengths in one lens. 24 to 105 is a long reach for optics. The 24-70 is a much better lens and stays within the parameters of lens making. As is the nikon 24-70 which I find to actually be better than the canon version for edge detail. all being equal. But, I've always found canon glass to be softer than Nikon at the edges. weather it's glass or electronics, Im not sure. Nikon has always had a harder edge. Both excellent although if you calibrate your glass.2 Identical lenses from each company will be ever so slightly different.

Laurin is pretty much right. The 24-105mm is a bit soft compared to the 24-70mm and you need to watch for CA, altho this can be corrected in ACR/Lightroom if you shoot RAW. The older 24-70mm f2.8L is a better bet, but the new MkII is coming out and should prove to be outstanding. But if finances hold you back some, then the 24-105mm should do you fine.

Agree. I always found it strange having to correct a lens with software. LOL

Well, before I came here, I thought a lens was a lens; that the only difference was its build quality and sharpness. But there's more. CA, color, contrast. But I've learned not to waste my money and do a bit of research and go for the best. I really wish I could get a 14-24mm like Nikon has for my Canon. :)

As for focusing, here's what I used to adjust my lenses for focus: http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/article_pages/cameras/1ds3_af_micoadjustment.html Does an ok job. And no two lenses are exactly the same.

Here's the AlignFocus MKII http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/747316-REG/LensAlign_LA_LA2_LensAlign_MkII_Focus_Calibration.html Might be worthwhile getting but here's a do it yourself: http://www.bobatkins.com/photography/technical/focus_testing.html
So many products and ways of testing now.

And the CA being corrected in software, the best lenses have minimal CA relative to the consumer grade lenses but they aren't immune to it. That's where the software comes in; To correct that last little bit of CA. Which is why I shoot RAW.

I had the 24-70. On a crop body it was fine at all local lengths (though not as sharp as I'd expected) but on the 5D II it was awful at anyting wider than 40mm - regardless of f-stop. I tried two copies, and eventually sent back the whole kit.

There's a new 24-70mm f2.8L MkII that's been announced. Should be shipping soon. Promises to rival the sharpness of the 70-200mm f2.8L IS MkII. I picked up that lens back at Christmas and its very sharp.

i have one, now using on a 5d MKIII, no complains, all corrected in camera, very sharp, fast and accurate focus, but in a crop body the focal lenght is not so good ( i used one on a 60D)

I have heard that the 24-105 is soft in the corners on a full-frame. Since I use mine on a cropped sensor I have never had an issue. The 24-105 and the 10-22 are the two lenses I always have with me.

I am satisfied with 24-105.First copy was bad in corners, but I replaced it and this one is excellent.Bit soft at 105 but from 28 to 90 great. For all purpose it is a great choice.
