20D battery grip Connundrum

Anyone know which brand of batteries will work in the 20d battery grip AA cassette ? I have tried panasonic and some rechargables but neither work!
The instruction manual states that "some brands of battery will not work in this device" and then leaves you in the dark... strange............and yes , i did remember to take the lens cap off.

Thanks for that, it was very helpful.
It seems the grips are known by canon to be defective and they are repairing any sent back to them....

just a note on that....

The batteries don't last very long in there...

That is really just a "get-home" solution, nothing more, just to get you out of a jam!!
