how in the world you you guys keep your images under 5mb's I made a "grundge style" background and can't get in under the 5mb limit. I have even sized it down to 100x75 px's. and got it down to 8mb's I wanted to enter the July contest. anyway. any tips of the trade you would be willing to share with me?!? I try to use brushes less often but it really limits me to what i really want to do. I wonder if SS would be willing to change the standards to 10 mb's or something?
ohhh well would love to know how you guys do it!
hugs

Use Illustrator/Freehand or any vector program. Create as line art & colour and it should keep your file size down.
But then again, you won't have the flexibility of Photoshop.

I am using Illustrator, and there are some functions that make the final file size so big when I save as Illustrator8. When it happens, I convert the vector to JPEG file, which I do not really want. |

I find this aswell.
CS has lots of extra features that earlier versions did not have. I use both CS and Illus 8.0 and find the 8.0 eps files are smaller.
Things to maybe avoid in CS:
Turn off Embed Fonts (shouldn't matter anyway as you should create outlines for all fonts)
Turn off - Include document thumbnails
Avoid - Transparency where possible
Avoid - Gradients where possible
Delete anything that is not part of the illustration like spare layers and stray objects (you should do this anyway as I recon SS will reject it)
Rob
P.S. of course some things are just so complex that there is no way to reduce them. Then you are going to have to settle with a jpeg. |

Hi I'm new here and I was wondering where it says that illustrations have to be under 5 MB? I've read the submitter's guidelines and the FAQ and only see information about the pixel size, not the file size. I haven't been paying any attention to this but maybe I should? I'm only doing fractals at this time.
Thanks for any insight.

The 5mb limit is only for vectors. Illustrations in jpeg format can be anything above the minimum.

I'm not sure how it would work for vectors but when I need an image sized down I open it in Paint and just resave it. It brings the file size down considerably without losing any detail.
Hope that helps. |
