Backsaving to Illustrator 8

Anybody have a list of best practices for backsaving to AI 8? I have been playing around and plan to get into vector illustration a little more...but it's killing me to have to do that backsave and lose transparencies, etc. (or increase the file size at the least, as well as making it less useful to most designers in the process).

You can't preserve transparancy in EPS8 files, the only thing you can do is fake transparancy, or you can expand simple transparancies in Illustrator.
